Byrne Notice: Loftin Gets Authority to Negotiate A&M AD's Employment

Updated: Fri 1:55 PM, May 04, 2012

The next step in a change at the top of Aggie Athletics has been taken.

Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin has been granted the authority to negotiate the terms of an employment agreement with Athletic Director Bill Byrne. The move came through a vote by the A&M System Board of Regents at its Friday meeting.

Reports have swirled that Byrne would be leaving the post he's held since December 2002. His current contract expires next year.

Thursday, a university spokesperson said no other action would be taken by A&M Friday in regards to Byrne.

In his latest Wednesday Weekly report on the Aggie Athletics' website, Byrne said he was scheduled to meet with Southeastern Conference officials visiting College Station about A&M's transition from the Big 12.

It was the prior Wednesday Weekly that Byrne acknowledged that his time in Aggieland was coming to a close.

"I've been looking forward to my life after athletics," he wrote. "I will be right there with all of you rooting for our teams and watching Texas A&M strive for championships. This is a wonderful time at Texas A&M and I look forward to announcing, with President Loftin's support, my next steps."
