The Cardinals and Michael Wacha, the organization’s top pick in last week’s First-Year Player Draft, have reached an agreement, general manager John Mozeliak confirmed on Tuesday. That agreement will be official once Wacha passes a physical, which is scheduled for Thursday.

Wacha, who the Cardinals took with the No. 19 overall pick, was the first to disclose that he was headed to St. Louis for a physical, doing so in a tweet late Monday night. That tweet was directed to Jordan John, a pitcher for the University of Oklahoma, who was taken by Detroit in the sixth round of the Draft. In the tweet, Wacha said he was flying to St. Louis on Wednesday.

Wacha, 20, just finished his junior season at Texas A&M, where the right-handed starter went 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 113 1/3 innings. The recommended signing bonus for that slot in the Draft is $1.9 million, though Wacha is not locked into agreeing to that figure.

Wacha was taken with the pick the Cardinals earned as compensation from the Angels for the departure of Albert Pujols over the winter. The Cardinals’ other first-round pick – outfielder James Ramsey – remains unsigned. He was taken four picks after Wacha.
