Aggie fans won the right for one of the most popular sports programs on television to shoot a commercial at Texas A&M. Thursday, it debuted.
ESPN College Gameday's promo, shot late on July 31 and into the early morning of August 1, has been posted to YouTube. It will air on television beginning Monday and throughout the season to promote the network's Saturday college football pregame show.
In the commercial, the thousands of Aggies who turned out to Kyle Field are seen reenacting a Midnight Yell Practice led by Yell Leaders. Most of the College Gameday crew and A&M Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin are seen looking on and discussing the tradition.
Gameday analyst and former coach Lee Corso walks in wearing pajamas and holding a stuffed animal. After complaining about the noise, he walks back to a tent set up on Kyle Field next to a smaller tent where Reveille VIII is laying inside.
According to ESPN, nearly a million online votes were cast in the contest that wrapped up in May. It pitted 124 schools' fan bases against each other to see who could get the most support for the commercial. More than 200,000 votes came in for A&M.
“The GameDay Vote contest and the Midnight Yell GameDay spot are a really big step for this iconic franchise," said Scott Parker, vice president for ESPN marketing, in a statement. "From fans selecting the location of the shoot to thousands of A&M students participating in the spot, the campaign really captures the unique, interactive, on-campus experience of College Gameday in a brand new way.”
The first edition of College Gameday this season will take place in Texas, as Michigan and Alabama face off at the Cowboys Classic in Arlington.
A&M last hosted an episode of College Gameday in 2006 for the Oklahoma game. During the show, analyst Kirk Herbstreit called the Aggies the best student section in all of college football, a soundbite played by A&M's 12th Man TV before every game at Kyle Field.
The Aggies open their season September 8 on ESPN against Florida in the team's first SEC game.
