Davis Advances to Match Play at U.S. Women’s Amateur

CLEVELAND – Texas A&M women’s golfer Sarah Beth Davis advanced to match play at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur with a 5-over-par score of 149 (71-79) at the 6,512-yard, par-72 course at The Country Club.

From Victoria, Texas, Davis finished tied for 51st after 36 holes of stroke play and is set to tee off at 1:10 p.m. (CT) today against University of Arkansas’ Emily Tubert in the Round of 64 match play. The first round of match play is televised from 2-4 p.m. (CT) on the Golf Channel.

Following stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, the field was cut to the low 64 scorers. The cut came at 5-over-par 149.

Davis’s first-round score of a 1-under 71 started with an eagle on the first hole. It is the only eagle on that hole in the championship thus far. She was 3-under through the first three holes, but four bogeys left her +1 at the turn. She would have just one other bogey on the day, on 10, and followed with birdies on 12, 17 and 18 to scorch the back nine at 2-under.

Davis turned in two birdies, 11 pars and 3 bogeys for her second-round score of 6-over 78.

Fellow Aggie golfers, Chelsea Mocio and Natalie Reeves also competed in the championship. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Mocio tied for 99th with an 11-over 155 (78-79). Reeves, from Euless, Texas, tied for 114th with a 13-over 157 (83-74).

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The 36 holes of stroke play are followed by six rounds of match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
