COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior Mel Dumezich threw the second no-hitter of her career and of the week as the No. 9 Texas A&M softball team (17-0) ended the Texas A&M Invitational with a 5-0 record on the weekend after run-ruling Southeastern Louisiana (10-5), 8-0 on Sunday.
Dumezich started the week with a no-hit effort against Stephen F. Austin, the first of her career, and added a second big outing against the Lady Lions on Sunday. The Whiting, Ind., native allowed just two runners on base through the entire five-inning game, on a walk and a fielding error.
Freshman Cali Lanphear ended the game with a walk-off, three-run home run that slammed into the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. The designated player was 2-for-2 on the game with three runs scored and five RBI.
Lanphear started the scoring as she pulled a pitch hard over the wall in right field in the bottom of the second to shove the Aggies out to a 2-0 lead. Dumezich started the inning’s action with a two-out single down the left-field line before she was sent home on the rip over right field.
A double by junior Amber Garza, a single by Dumezich and a walk by Lanphear quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth before junior Jenna Stark took a pitch to the hip to force in a 3-0 run and juice the bags again.
With two outs, senior Meagan May poked a double down the left-field line. The hit sent junior Allison Garrett, pinch running for Dumezich, and Lanphear home for a 5-0 A&M lead over the Lady Lions.
Five innings was all the Aggies needed to polish a new 17-0 record. Lanphear went yard over right-center in the bottom of the fifth and pushed freshman Alex Masek and senior Sydney Shannon home with her. Masek was pinch-running for junior Nicole Morgan, who singled to centerfield, and Shannon reached on a walk.
Dumezich (11-0) walked just one batter and struck out four on the no-hit effort for her third solo shutout of the week. SELU’s Taylor Bishop (2-3) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits and two walks through three innings.
Up next, the undefeated Aggies will host Sam Houston State in a single game this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
