COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M softball junior Mel Dumezich was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week today by the conference office.
The honor is the third of Dumezich’s career and the first for any Texas A&M player this season. She took the distinction twice as a freshman.
The Whiting, Ind., native was 2-1 in the circle this week with a 0.68 ERA, topping No. 23 Baylor and No. 6 Oklahoma with complete-game shutouts. Dumezich allowed just two earned runs in 20 2/3 innings while fanning 22 batters. In the Aggies’ 4-0 shutout of the league-leading Sooners, Dumezich pounded a solo home run off of OU ace Keilani Ricketts and picked up the head-to-head victory.
This season Dumezich leads the conference in wins (21), innings pitched (199.2), appearances (35) and games started (28), and is second in strikeouts with 234.
Dumezich and the 16th-ranked Aggies face No. 24 Texas Tech today in Lubbock in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is at 5 p.m., while game two is set for a 7 p.m. start. The series finale will take place tomorrow at 5 p.m. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
