IRVING, TX -- Career best marks amid victories for a pair of Aggies on the opening weekend of the outdoor track and field season earned Sam Humphreys and Donique’ Flemings the Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office today.
Humphreys, a junior javelin thrower, shattered his previous school record of 251-9 (76.73) by nearly five feet in throwing the 2012 U.S. leading mark of 256-6 (78.19) to win the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, this past weekend. He currently ranks 11th on the 2012 world list.
Using a short run on his approach, Humphreys broke the meet record 230-1 (70.14) set in 2001 and he also bettered the Olympic Trials A standard of 252-7 (77.00). Last season Humphreys opened the season with a mark of 245-2 (74.73) also using a short run on his approach.
Humphreys, who earned his third Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor over his Aggie career, will compete in the discus this weekend at UT-Arlington and the following week will throw at the Texas Relays, where he is a two-time defending champion in the javelin.
Flemings, a junior hurdler, won her 100-meter hurdle race in a career best of 13.27 seconds to dominate the field at the Castillo Invitational. Her previous best time of 13.33 was set twice in 2010, once at the Texas Relays and the other was to win the USATF Junior title later that summer. This is the first Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor Flemings has been awarded.
With her PR Flemings moved to No. 9 on the Aggie all-time list. She is currently the second fastest collegian and second fastest American while ranked fourth on the 2012 world list in the 100 hurdles.
This week at the USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles, Flemings will run the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, an event she has a career best of 58.10 from 2010.
