Klegou Drops Tough Match at NCAA Championships

Posted: Wed 3:11 PM, May 23, 2012

Texas A&M senior co-captain Alexis Klegou battled in a three-hour match against a higher-ranked opponent in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship held at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Georgia, but Klegou lost, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss on Wednesday.

Klegou is ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA rankings and Scholtz is seeded No. 9-16 in the NCAA Championships and is ranked No. 14.
“Gou (Klegou) battled and won the second set tiebreaker and then had his chance early in the third to break,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “Nik (Scholtz) hit some big serves to get out of trouble.

Gou got down 5-2 in the third and battled back to 5-4 and was serving at 30 love. Nik hit some good shots to break. This was a match that could have gone either way, but in the end Gou came up a little short. I am very proud of his fight and effort. He gave everything that he had.”

Klegou, from Dunkerque, France, was recently named Senior of the Year in the Texas Region by the ITA as he helped the Aggies back to the NCAA Team Championships for the 19th consecutive season. He was the Big 12 Champion at No. 4 singles as a junior and stepped up as a senior leader to play at the No. 1 singles position. He ends the season with a 17-17 overall record and was 7-14 against nationally-ranked opponents.

Scholtz advances to face North Carolina’s Jose Hernandez in the second round of NCAA Singles Championship on Thursday.
