COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore Cali Lanphear was selected to the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List, the softball National Governing Body announced today.
Lanphear (Montgomery, Texas) earned a spot on the list for the first time in her young career after a breakout rookie season that saw her garner NFCA Freshman All-America honors and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. The then-freshman led the team in batting average (.362), runs (48), RBI (58) and home runs (21).
Lanphear joins five other sophomores, 20 juniors and 24 seniors on the prestigious list that will be narrowed to 25 finalists on April 9. The Southeastern Conference had the most member-schools represented with seven.
While an athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 7 and the Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 21. On May 27 prior to the start of the 2014 NCAA Women’s College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City, the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed.
