MONROE, MI -- Texas A&M's Mary Michael Maggio and Susy Grunden are set to compete in the 112th Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship this week at the Monroe Golf and Country Club.
The six-day event runs Monday, June 18 through June 23 and features 140 players from 31 states and six countries. Including Maggio (Conway, Ark.) and Grunden (Krum, Texas), the field is full with players from over 60 college women's golf teams, and some outstanding junior and amateur ranked players.
Past winners of this championship include current LPGA members Cristie Kerr, Brittany Lang, Stacy Lewis and Grace Park as well as LPGA Hall of Fame Members Patti Berg, Beth Daniel, Jo Anne Gunderson Carner, Nancy Lopez and Louise Suggs.
Two 18-hole qualifying rounds will take place on Monday, June 18 and Tuesday, June 19. After the conclusion of these rounds, players will be placed in flights based on their qualifying scores. The low 64 players will contend for the championship title while the remaining players will compete in subsequent flights according to their qualifying scores. Single elimination match play will be played each day starting Wednesday, June 20. The 36-hole Championship Final will be contested on Saturday, June 23, while the remaining flight finals will be played on Friday afternoon, June 22. The public is welcome to attend every day free of charge.
Last season for Texas A&M, Maggio was second on the team with 74.79 stroke average. She was a 2012 All-Big 12 selection, a member of the Big 12 All-Tournament Team and the Big 12 Golfer of the Month in April. Grunden posted a 78.24 stroke average for the Aggies in 2011-12. She competed in six tournaments and had her best finish (T-18th) at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
A&M's Alex Neal (Baird, Texas) is also competing this week, but at the 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship held June 18-23 at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
