LAWRENCE, Kan. – Texas A&M junior Mary Michael Maggio led the 11th-ranked women’s golf team with a 3-over 73 and the Aggies remained in fifth place after the second round of the 2012 Big 12 Championship Saturday at the Lawrence Country Club.
Maggio improved her score by three strokes from round one to round two, and with a 10-over 150 she sits five shots back from the individual leader in fifth place. Maggio made the turn at 2-over after three bogeys and a birdie. She shot even par on the first two holes of the back nine and managed to battle back from a double bogey on 12 with par on the next five holes and a birdie on 18.
“Mary Michael played great all day with the exception of hole 12,” A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “She stayed patient and gave herself a ton of chances. She is very close to putting it all together.”
Oklahoma shot the low round of the day with 292 and moved into first place with a two-day total of 608. Iowa State is five strokes back in second with a score of 613 (311-302). Baylor is third with 615 (313-302) and Oklahoma State is fourth with 616 (318-304).
The Aggies saw a 14-stroke improvement from their first round and with 622 (318-304) stayed in fifth place. Following A&M is Texas (623), Texas Tech (629), Kansas State (632), Missouri (638) and Kansas (645).
“We played a little better today than yesterday but so did everyone else,” McCombs said. “We have to get mentally tougher and not be outcome oriented. We have done a great job all year with our process. I'm asking each and every player to take care of that tomorrow and see what happens. That's all we can do. We wanted to put ourselves in contention at the end of the day and we fell short of that.”
Sophomore Katerina Ruzickova dropped just outside of the top 10 after a second-round 78. She is tied for 11th with 154 (76-78). Freshman Patricia Garcia is tied for 19th with 158 (79-79). Sophomore Natalie Reeves shot A&M’s second-lowest round Saturday with a 6-over 76 and is tied for 35th with 162 (86-76). Junior Sarah Beth Davis is tied for 41st with 163 (86-77).
The Aggies’ final round of the 2012 Big 12 Championship begins Sunday at 8 a.m. A&M is paired with Texas and the top six teams tee off entirely from hole 1. The awards ceremony follows the conclusion of the third round. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
