May Invited to WNT Selection Camp

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M softball junior Meagan May has been invited to the 2012 USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) Selection Camp, the national governing body announced today.

The selection camp is to be held in Ashland, Ohio, June 10-12. Twenty-one attendees will compete for one of the five remaining spots on the National Team, which will be announced June 13. USA Softball selected 12 athletes to the WNT roster in January.

May (Spring, Texas) was recently selected to the All-Big 12 second team and the NFCA Division I All-Central Region Second team. The All-American leads the Aggies and the Big 12 with 53 walks this season, while ranking fourth in the nation. She also contributes a team-second 11 home runs and 31 RBI from the plate for a .291 average on the season. May's .483 on base percentage in conference play ranks fourth in the league.

The 17 athletes selected to the USA Softball roster will compete in six different events in the United States and Canada. The remaining athletes who are not selected to the Women’s National Team will make up the 2012 USA Softball Women’s Elite National Team and will face the National Team in exhibition play. Fans in the United States will get four opportunities to see the team in action with two exhibition stops scheduled as well as the Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game against Canada on June 23 and the World Cup of Softball VII presented by Lumber Liquidators, June 27- July 2, in Oklahoma City. Following the World Cup, the Women’s National Team is slated to compete July 4-9 at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada, and July 13-22 at the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

The No. 8 seed Aggies will host LSU, Bethune-Cookman and Texas State in the NCAA Softball College Station Regional this weekend at the Aggie Softball Complex. A&M takes on Bethune-Cookman today at 7 p.m., while LSU and Texas State will face off at 4 p.m. All games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
