COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Texas A&M agreed to pay former football coach Mike Sherman $1.5 million under a settlement reached earlier this month.

The Morning News obtained the information Friday under an open records request to the university. The document was signed by Sherman and A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and promised payment within 30 days. Minus taxes, Sherman received $1,137,147.35.
No state appropriations or tuition dollars was used toward Sherman’s settlement, an A&M spokesman said.

At the time of his firing, Sherman had three years remaining on his contract at about $5.4 million. A contract extension that would have added a year to his contract and boosted his salary was never executed by the university. The settlement acknowledges “various
disputes” related to a “proposed new employment contract under consideration in the summer/fall of 2011.”

Sherman compiled a 25-25 record at A&M including a disappointing 6-6 regular season in 2011. He was hired in January as the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.
