Nine Aggies compete at USA Junior Championships, seeking position on team competing in Barcelona

Texas A&M will have nine athletes involved in the USA Junior Championships this weekend in Bloomington, Indiana, with six current Aggies and three incoming A&M frosh. This USA Junior meet for under-20-year-old athletes serves as the selection meet for IAAF World Junior Championships, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain from July 10-15.

Of the nine Aggie athletes competing, six currently have the top mark among U.S. Juniors and hold a top 10 standing on the current World junior list for 2012.

Dalton Rowan, who placed eighth in the NCAA discus with a career best of 193-1, moved to No. 5 on the all-time U.S. Junior list with that performance and is the world leader in the discus for the 2012 season.

Other U.S. leaders from current Aggies include Devin Bogert in the javelin (236-1 / 71.97), Gregory Coleman in the 400 hurdles (51.01), and Kenneth Minkah in the 110 hurdles (13.88). Incoming freshman Aldrich Bailey leads the 400 (45.19) while Shelbi Vaughan tops the discus (193-11 / 59.10) as she has improved the high school national record twice this season.

Jennifer Madu, who won four events at the Texas 5A State meet, is ranked second among the U.S. junior triple jumpers (42-4.25) and seventh in the 100 (11.46). Also ranked second in the 200 is Olivia Ekponé (23.28) while Chelsea Utley is tied for third in the high jump (5-10).

The USA Junior Championships begin Friday and conclude on Sunday. First day action will include first round and finals for the women’s 100 with Madu and the men’s 110 hurdles with Minkah, along with a first round race for Coleman in the 400 hurdles. Field event finals will be contested in the women’s discus for Vaughan and men’s javelin for Bogert.

Saturday’s field events will include the women’s high jump for Utley. Running events include the first round of the 400 for Bailey, the first round of the 200 for Ekponé, and the final of the 400 hurdles for Coleman. Sunday’s schedule of finals includes the men’s discus for Rowan, the women’s triple jump for Madu as well as track finals in the 400 for Bailey and the 200 for Ekponé.
