The eighth-ranked Texas A&M equestrian team (1-1) hosts No. 3 South Carolina (4-1, 0-1 SEC) Friday at 11 a.m. at the Brazos County Expo Complex in the Aggies’ first Southeastern Conference meet of the season.
The Aggies and Gamecocks will start the competition with equitation over fences, slated for an 11 a.m. start in the South Arena. Horsemanship will follow fences in the South Arena, beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m. Equitation on the flat is set to start at 1 p.m. in the North Arena, and the show will end with reining in the South Arena, starting at about 2:30 p.m. All times are Central.
All home meets are free to the public. The first 75 fans through the gates on Friday will receive a pink Aggie equestrian t-shirt, celebrating October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Texas A&M hosted its first home meet of the season on Oct. 11, topping No. 10 SMU, 12-8, in comeback fashion. Haley Buchmiller (flat), Logan Pluhar (horsemanship) and Ashley Dotson (reining) picked up the Aggies’ first Most Outstanding Player (MOP) awards of the season with the victory.
“Our riders have shown continued improvement this season,” head coach Tana McKay said. “What I saw against SMU two weeks ago, and in practice since then, has shown that we are ready for South Carolina. They are always one of our toughest competitors and we welcome the challenge. We’re ready to start SEC competition and are really looking forward to this Friday.”
The Aggies and Gamecocks last met in April, when the hunter seat teams went head-to-head in the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Championships in Waco, resulting in a 6-2 USC victory. South Carolina also won both regular-season match-ups against Texas A&M last year, and holds a 6-5 all-time advantage over the Aggies.
No. 3 South Carolina is 4-1 this season, and 0-1 in SEC action, after winning the first four meets of the year. Last weekend the Gamecocks suffered their first loss of the year on a tiebreaker vs. No. 1 Georgia.
