PECK, AGGIES PLACE FOURTH AT MORRIS WILLIAMS INTERCOLLEGIATE
TEXAS A&M MEN’S GOLF
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Saturday, March 17, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas A&M junior Cameron Peck placed fourth with a 4-under 209 to lead the 14th-ranked Aggies to a fourth-place finish Saturday afternoon at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Peck (72-76-71) finished one shot out of first place, while A&M ended the weekend with a 16-over 868 (290-281-297). No. 1 Texas (843, -9) posted a 16-shot victory, with No. 20 New Mexico (+7) finishing second and TCU (+14) third.
“We didn’t play well today,” head coach J.T. Higgins said. “From start to finish we just really struggled with our ball striking. That’s unusual for us, but it kind of happens to us sometimes over here. We’ve had bad tourneys over here in the past and survived them, and then went on to have great finishes to our season, so we’re going to try and put this one in the rearview mirror as soon as possible.”
North Texas (+18) finished fifth, followed by Texas Tech (+31), Wake Forest (+33), College of Charleston (+34), UT Arlington (+46), St. John’s (+55), Sam Houston State (+56) and Utah (+96).
Peck wrapped a strong weekend with a solid final round on the par-71, 7,412-yard course. Over the course of the tournament, the Aggie All-American recorded just six bogeys and tallied 11 birdies.
“Cam played great again,” Higgins said. “I’m so proud of him. He made a double-bogey on 15 and then came back and birdied 17 and 18 and ended up with a great finish. I’m just really proud for him and really excited and I’m glad to have him playing well. We just need to get a few things fixed with the other guys, but we’re really close and we’ll get them going.”
Senior Geoff Shaw, playing as an individual, finished one spot back of Peck in sixth place with a 2-under 211 (65-71-75). Senior Jordan Russell (72-68-79=219) tied for 20th at 6-over, while redshirt freshman Greg Yates (73-74-73=220, +7) finished 26th and sophomore Jade Scott 40th (78-74-74=226, +13).
A&M returns to action next weekend when the Aggies participate in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate outside Charleston, S.C. The tournament is scheduled for March 25 and 26 at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
“We’re looking forward to getting back home and getting ready for South Carolina,” Higgins said. “We played pretty well there last year, and will look to do so again this year and then start gearing up for postseason.”
