SHAW, PECK TOP LEADERBORD, AGGIES THIRD AT MORRIS WILLIAMS

AUSTIN, Texas—The 14th-ranked Texas A&M men’s golf team improved nine shots in Friday’s afternoon round and sits in third place with 18 holes to play at the 46th annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club.

A&M carded a 6-over 290 in the morning round, then responded with field’s second-best score of the day—a 3-under 281—to move to 3-over 571 for the tournament. The Aggies sit 10 shots back of the leader, top-ranked Texas (561, -7), while No. 20 New Mexico is in second (567, -1). In addition, two Aggies—senior Geoff Shaw and junior Cameron Peck—top the leaderboard heading into Saturday’s final round of action.

“I thought we had some great individual performances but overall it wasn’t the best we’ve played,” head coach J.T. Higgins said. “As a matter of fact, I think the score we put up probably wasn’t as bad as we could have played. We’re 10 back and played the par 5s at 8-over, and that’s just not like us. That being said, I like where we’re at going into tomorrow. I think we’re in a good position to have a chance to win if we fix some of the mistakes we made today.”

Playing as an individual, Shaw has a two-shot lead on the field after carding a 6-under 136 (65-71). He matched the tournament record for the course with a 65 in the first round, carding six birdies and no bogeys.

Peck ended the day at 4-under 138 (72-66) to lead A&M’s team contingent, firing the best score of the afternoon session. Senior Jordan Russell is also in the top 10, sitting in sixth place with a 2-under 140 (72-68).

“Obviously Geoff did a fantastic job today, tying the tournament record for this course,” Higgins said. “Cam is right there in second, and Jordan is a few shots behind them. They all played great today and kept their composure. All three of those guys are in the hunt, and I’m pleased for them and anxious to see how they do tomorrow.”

True freshman Ty Dunlap is in 27th at 4-over 146 (73-73), redshirt freshman Greg Yates is in 35th with a 5-over 147 (73-74) and sophomore Jade Scott is in 49th with a 10-over 152 (78-74).

On the team leaderboard, TCU sits in fourth at 5-over 573, followed by North Texas (576, +8), Texas Tech (+13), Wake Forest (+22), Sam Houston State (+24), College of Charleston (+24), UT Arlington (+25), St. John’s (+34) and Utah (+57).

The Aggies will resume play in the third and final round on Saturday morning, with tee times beginning at approximately 9:18 a.m. (CT) from the first hole. The par-71, 7,412-yard UT Golf Club is located 2200 University Club Drive in the Steiner Ranch area of northwest Austin (zip 78732), near the intersection of RM 620 and RM 2222.
