COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Former UCLA assistant Jason Sigler has been named assistant men’s golf coach at Texas A&M, head coach J. T. Higgins announced Tuesday.
"Jason was the first person I thought of to replace Jim, and I am thrilled he has decided to join our team,” Higgins said. “He is without a doubt, one of the top young assistants in the game. He comes to us from one of the best programs in the country, is an outstanding recruiter and a wonderful teacher. Jason will be a great mentor to our young men, and I know he will make a big impact on our program. I look forward to working together to bring more championships to Aggieland."
Prior to accepting the position at A&M, Sigler spent two years as an assistant coach at UCLA under head coach Derek Freeman. In each of his two seasons with the Bruins, UCLA contended for the national title by reaching the quarterfinals of match play at the NCAA Championship both years.
UCLA standout Patrick Cantlay was the most decorated of three Bruins who garnered All-America accolades during Sigler’s tenure, as Cantlay received the Jack Nicklaus Award for GCAA National Player of the Year in addition to GolfWeek Player of the Year honors following the 2011-12 season.
In addition to its success on the course, the UCLA men’s golf team earned the highest team GPA of any Bruin squad during the 2010-11 academic year and most recently placed seven golfers on the Pac-12 All-Academic team this summer.
"I am honored with the opportunity to work with Coach Higgins and join the Texas A&M family,” Sigler said. “This University has a tremendous culture of success academically and athletically. I look forward to meeting the players and competing in our first season as a member of the Southeastern Conference."
Sigler, 29, spent five years as an instructor for the Dave Pelz Golf School. For the 2010 year, he served as the lead instructor at the Pelz school's Atlanta location, where he taught more than 1,000 students in one, two and three-day seminars. Sigler opened and organized the school in Atlanta and consistently received high evaluations from students. Dave Pelz is considered one of America's foremost short game experts and has tutored many golf professionals.
Sigler played at Kansas from 2003-06, where he won the 2004 Kansas City Amateur Championship. He was an All-Big 12 Academic selection from 2004-06 before earning his degree in sports management from Kansas in 2006.
A native of Leavenworth, Kan., where he attended Immaculata High School, Sigler recently was engaged to Stephanie Alexander and the couple is planning a November wedding.
Sigler replaces Jim Anderson who was named head coach at the University of Arizona in late June after spending three seasons at Texas A&M.
