CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Texas A&M women’s tennis team holds a narrow lead after the second day of the four-team Miami Spring Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
The 14th-ranked Aggies won two of three doubles matches against No. 11 Texas and three of seven singles matches against No. 9 Miami today and are in first place in the overall team standings with 62 points. Miami is in second with 58 points, followed by Texas with 57 points and Vanderbilt with 51 points.
“I'd have to say that our team is handling themselves really well with the introduction of some stiff competition out of the gates,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. "In Texas and Miami we have played two top teams dead even. Our group understands that the season is a process, and we will no doubt get better and sharper as the season moves forward."
Texas A&M senior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles, improved her tournament singles record to 2-0 today, defeating 57th-ranked Lina Lilekite of Miami, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Maria Ines Deheza, who joined the Aggies earlier this month, moved to 2-0 in her A&M debut, defeating the Hurricanes’ Clementina Riobueno, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Senior Nazari Urbina, who suffered a loss in singles on the first day of competition, also got a win for the Aggies today with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Melissa Bolivar of Miami.
All three Aggies also got victories in doubles to help A&M win two of three matches against the No. 11 Longhorns. Sanchez-Quintanar teamed with Deheza for the first time, and the tandem cruised to an 8-4 victory over Aeriel Ellis and Lina Padegimaite. Urbina paired with Sun Wen to defeat Elizabeth Begley and Juliana Gajic, 8-4.
Below are the complete results after Day 2. The tournament concludes tomorrow with A&M facing Miami in doubles and taking on Vanderbilt in singles.
