Texas A&M's Jonathan Mathis To Play in 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl

Updated: Thu 10:55 PM, Jan 10, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The NFL Players Association is proud to announce that JONATHAN MATHIS of Texas A&M University has committed to playing in the 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

The defensive tackle from Houston joins the growing roster of talented draft-eligible seniors competing in the all-star game on Saturday, January 19 at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised live on ESPN2. ESPNU will also air live broadcasts from practices on Thursday, January 17.

In 2012, Mathis played in all 13 games for the stout Texas A&M defense which limited Oklahoma to a mere 13 points in the Aggies’ Cotton Bowl victory and handed eventual national champion Alabama its only loss, a 29-24 upset in Tuscaloosa. He recorded 23 tackles, including 10 solo and one for loss, a sack and four breakups in his senior campaign, a year which saw Texas A&M finish with a fifth-place national ranking. It is the Aggies’ highest end-of-year ranking since 1956. Mathis initially emerged as a key contributor after joining the Aggies in 2010, making 41 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss of 20 yards. He also helped lead the Blinn College Buccaneers to the NJCAA national championship in 2009.

Pro-football players and coaching legends will work with the game’s future stars, giving them first-hand insight on what it takes to win on and off of the field. Herm Edwards and Dick Vermeil will serve as the head coaches for the American and National Teams. Player Ambassadors for the game include former NFL players Terrell Davis, Hank Baskett, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Lorenzo Neal and Andre Reed.
