IRVING, Texas – Texas A&M women’s basketball seniors Kelsey Assarian and Adaora Elonu earned recognition on the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball Team, the league office announced Tuesday.

From Naples, Fla., Assarian was one of just six student-athletes in the conference to become a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree. Elonu (Houston, Texas), already a two-time Academic All-Big 12 second team member, earned a spot on the first team for the first time in her career.

A six-foot forward, Assarian graduated in three-and-a-half years with a bachelor’s degree in Information & Operations Management and a 3.4 GPA. She received A&M’s Team Academic Award last season and is currently taking graduate courses in Agricultural Leadership and Development. A 6-foot-1 forward, Elonu graduated in just three years with a bachelor’s degree in Allied Health. She carried a 3.56 GPA across the stage and is currently working towards a master’s degree in health education.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, The Academic All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball Team includes 27 first team honorees and 13 second team members.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Aggies’ sixth-annual Beat the Hell Outta Breast Cancer game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 when the Texas A&M hosts Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. (CT) at Reed Arena.
