HARROLD, Texas -- Later this month when classes start, a tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow its teachers and staff to carry guns for protection.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings.

But the gun-toting teachers must follow certain requirements.

-- They must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun;
-- Must be authorized to carry by the district;
-- Must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Superintendent David Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff's office, leaving students and teachers without protection.

Texas law outlaws firearms on school campuses "unless pursuant to the written regulations or written authorization of the institution."

The 110-student district is 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth on the eastern end of Wilbarger County, near the Oklahoma border.

As a teacher, I really feel sad that it has come to this. Teachers carrying guns. No, I'm not against it, I'm just commenting on how sad it is for our society for this to occur. Paducah. Jonesboro. Columbine. Minnesota. Virginia Tech. All preventable tragedies if people were armed. But it only shows how much times have changed. Now we are all desensitized to it. Seeing a gun in school doesn't have the same effect as it did in years past. Most kids are used to it. Most teachers fear it. I really, really wish I didn't have to carry one, but I'd rather have one than not.

Just think - if teachers (or even some students) had been armed at Virginia Tech, maybe someone could have "taken out" the gunman before he killed so many people. I think arming teachers is a good idea.

If I can not trust a teacher with a gun, then i can not trust the teacher with my children.

Students are not the only perpetrators of violent crime. Anyone can wander into a school even with security. More schools should pay attention to the 2nd amendment.

In response to OMG - Your reaction is that of the typical uninformed citizen. What you may not realize is that when schools were designated "gun-free zones," students and staff literally became "sitting ducks" to angry students and parents "hell bent" on reataliation for some real or imagined mis-deed. Worse than that, un-armed schools are an open invitation to terrorists, especially those schools that are located more than 20 minutes from the help of law enforcement. Did you know that in most school shootings, the death toll is tallied in the first 10 minutes or less of the attack? Most people are not aware of that statistic. I encourage you to research school shootings and read the book "Terror in Beslan" before burying your head completely in the sand on this issue. Understand that not every teacher will be armed. Not everyone desires or is skilled enough to handle a firearm. What is important is that this "news coverage" has just made this school one of the safest in the state!

OMG is the typical Liberal. Tradegy is what has happened in schools where there were NO armed goodguys. How many of the kids at Columbine would still be alive today if there had been an armed faculty? Tell me OMG, how many school shootings occur in Israel? --- Times up, because almost, if not all of the teachers are well armed. I do hope that you never get in a situation where someone else will have to put his or HER life on the line to protect you, but being a Liberal you are used to letting someone else take care of you. Way to go HARROLD!!!

It's a crying shame that teachers have to resort to carrying weapons to school. I blame PARENTS for not teaching their children to obey. What happened to respect, honor, obey? I seriously think it needs to go back to the way it was when I was in school. Paddling in the principle's office. The government has taken out too many things in our schools.

This is an excellent idea. They should allow ALL CHL holders to carry on ALL school campuses. Although I do not have a CHL, I can tell you the people that have them are not a threat. They have been through a criminal background check and they have been trained. Too bad a CHL holder was not at Columbine or Virginia Tech. Perhaps some lives would have been saved.

I am very much pro gun, but from a lawenforcement stand point I think this is a bad idea. From the sound of the size of the school, were the cops and teachers are neighbors it might be ok. But in a larger school were the officers responding to an active shooter situation, probley won't know the teachers. I can forsee a teacher being shot by mistake.

I think that's a wonderful idea.

I see nothing but tragedy here.

It is about time, just make sure the teachers are trained well on how to use them. I dont think any teacher could live with themself if they accidently harm a child while trying to protect them.

Excellent!! More School districts need to follow this lead!
