An emergency custody hearing is expected to be held to determine who will care for four children found alone in 'deplorable' living conditions in Harris County.

The four siblings, ages 1 to 7, were taken into temporary custody of Child Protective Services after the eldest child stopped a stranger and asked for a ride to school on Tuesday.
The Houston Chronicle reported the woman dropped the child off at school then called authorities.
The Apartment manager told the newspaper she found the children sitting on the floor inside the dirty apartment.

A neighbor said her granddaughter played with the children, but she never saw the children's parents.
Neighbor Ethel Johnson said "This hit home. You read about it. You look at it on television, but this is almost like family. It really hurts very much."

The children's father, who showed up at the apartment, told authorities he moved out some time ago.
