The deaths of eight dogs that became overheated in a city animal control truck has some animal welfare activists calling for the animal control officer to be fired.

The dogs were left in the truck while the officer went to lunch
on August 26th. The high in Houston on that day was 95 degrees.
The officer has told Bureau of Animal Care and Regulation officials that the air conditioning was working on her truck when she went to lunch but malfunctioned.

The Houston Chronicle reports the department is investigating
because the air conditioning was working when the officer returned
to the shelter with the dogs.
The officer has been assigned to duties within the shelter while
the investigation is conducted.

Activist Sherry Nassar said in an e-mail to the newspaper that,
quote, "In any other work setting, an employee who screws up this
bad would be fired."

A spokeswoman for the city health and human services department,
Kathy Barton, said it's, quote, "a mechanical issue or a human
failure issue."

Wow, I don't think this was even worth writing about being it's just a DOG! Maybe this would be a better way of ridding the streets of strays. Wish they would come get all the feral cats in my neighborhood and do the same thing.

HOW HEARTLESS CAN YOU BE? Maybe someone should put you in the back of a hot vehicle and let you find out how it feels to smother to death in the heat!!

Maybe she just "forgot" about those babies in the backseat! As for an animal control officer having a love of animals to do thier job...think again, most (not all) just want a job and don't care...she (the animal control worker) obviously didn't care enough!

She should have taken the dogs to the animal shelter first before eating lunch no matter if the air conditioner. The dogs should come first, it is your job to take care of the animals. I think she should get fired.

That's terrible. She's wrong and needs to be punished. The dogs were trapped. She needs to be put in a cage without a/c in 95 degree weather and see if she can survive it. Some people think it's nothing if it's an animal. Shame shame on her, I hope she feels good about her-self and I hope she loses her lunch!!!!!

I really don't think ppl become an animal control officer unless they love animals. I still think if the investigation proves it was her fault....that she should be severely reprimanded. It is SO sad that this happened, but she is a human that needs a job...and I don't think she meant to do it.

If the AC malfunctioned, then I think the officer should be left alone and go back to work.If her AC is working now, then she lied and was definitely negligent.

That is HORRIBLE! She should have never left them in the truck while she was eating! Yes, she had the a/c going, but it malfunctioned! This whole situation would have turned out different IF she had taken the poor dogs to the shelter before she went on her lunchbreak! POOR DOGS!
