Tejano singer Emilio Navaira will spend a month under house arrest and a year on probation after pleading no contest to a four-year-old charge of driving while intoxicated.

Navaira, known to his fans as Emilio, entered the plea Wednesday in Bexar County.

The defense said Navaira’s vehicle slipped off a slick exit ramp in January 2005 while he was returning from a hurricane benefit concert.

Defense attorney Demetrio Duarte Jr. said Navaira decided to plead no contest because of the many complicating factors in his life, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Navaira suffered serious injuries in a 2008 bus crash in Houston.

He wore a protective helmet for his head injuries.

The sentence will run concurrently with the two years probation he received for his guilty plea in the Houston crash.

The case was postponed seven times because of a court backlog.

"Tejano singer Emilio Navaira will spend a month under house arrest and a year on probation after pleading no contest to a four-year-old charge of driving while intoxicated." How bout lifting is driver's license for a few years as well? TWO dwi related crashes (they were NOT accidents!) in 3 years would strongly suggest that this guy is too dangerous to be allowed behind the wheel.

There seems to be no such thing as punishment for DWI.
