A man authorities say confessed to abandoning two Salvadoran children in a field after their mother paid him $700 was in custody Thursday.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said Adan Hernandez, 26, was injured while leading authorities on a high-speed chase Tuesday in which his vehicle rolled over several times in Willacy County.
Hernandez was treated at a hospital and then arrested.
Deputies said he told them the children's mother paid him to take her 1-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister Saturday to a relative's house in Houston after they met in east Edinburg.
A jailer at the Hidalgo County Jail says Hernandez was in custody Wednesday night under bonds totaling $160,000.
