After a six month search, the diocese of Austin has a new bishop.
Pope Benedict XVI has named Joe Vásquez as the Bishop of the Diocese of Austin, which serves the Brazos Valley.
Bishop Vásquez will be the fifth bishop of Austin and the first Mexican-American to lead the diocese.
He succeeds Bishop Gregory Aymond who now serves as Archbishop in New Orleans.
Bishop Vásquez was born July 9, 1957 in Stamford, Texas and previously served as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Dear Curious, To answer your question, Jesus gave the Apostles the power to forgive or retain sins. The apostles passed that power down to bishops and priests through the laying of hands. So, when a priest says my sins are forgiven, I know he has the power to do that. May I ask you, how do you know that Jesus didn't retain a sin that you asked Him to forgive you? First, he gave the norm of forgiving to the apostles; He did not tell people to go directly to Himself after He was gone. Secondly, He mentions retaining rather than forgiving some sins. How do you know how He hanndled any particular sin?

I thank you all. I especially appreciate not one of you treating my questions as if I'm going to hell for asking. I definitely was NOT insulting your denomination, just curious. I will read the new testament and educate myself. I believe God did send his son Jesus to die for me, and believe he rose again. To 'Another George from Florida'- I have faith that God forgives my sin I repent directly to him. How do you know you're forgiven when confessing to a priest? Read 'Another George's' comments below to understand my question to him.

George it is obvious that you have not read the New Testament.I can give you many passages about bishops priests,Paul and others asking for prayers but that would make it too easy for you. Get out yor bible and read what is says not what you want it to say.On second thought read James 5:13-20.
