Hundreds of Texas A&M employees, wanting to know if they will have a job in the coming months, got some answers tonight.
The university has been looking at outsourcing A&M facility services to save money. For the first time, employees had the chance to talk to the Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp.
Sharp addressed them in a special meeting this afternoon at the Rudder Theatre on campus. There were questions of all types.
"How can you sleep at night pursuing this measure?" asked one employee.
Another asked if the private companies would offer the same retirement benefits employees currently have.
“That's what you will find out before they sign a contract,” said Chancellor Sharp.
With regard to retirement, benefits and pay Chancellor John Sharp said the private companies in consideration understand what the university wants.
"We put in a provision, based on the conversations we had with these companies, that you will be judged by your commitment and your signing of a contract to treat equitably and fairly the current employees. That is not just wages, but that is health insurance and retirement,” said Chancellor Sharp. "If these things [private companies] are accepted, the difference is where the paychecks come from.”
He says the university has the employee's and taxpayer's best interest in mind.
