You could be seeing changes on some highly traveled Bryan streets because the city is looking at allowing businesses to place business advertising signs in areas that are currently prohibited.

The Bryan City ordinance doesn't allow a few business corridors, on some highly traveled roads in the city, to have signs near the street. We aren't talking about the big billboards, but the smaller size signs used to market customers.

"We had Mobile One signs at first, but the auditor came by and told us we had to remove them and could put Texas or United States Flags,” said Tron Murray who works for Mobile One Tradition Oil & Lube on Villa Maria Road.

Kevin Russell with the city says he receives complaints that the signs aren't noticed because they are so far away from traffic.

Currently signs are not allowed in the area from the right-of-way line on the street to 25 feet towards the property. The proposed amendment would allow businesses to place signs within that 25-foot area.

"The right-of way-width is so wide in many places that where they were placing their sign was so far away from the street that people didn't know where their business was because their sign wasn't visible,” said Kevin Russell with Bryan Planning and Development.

If the amendment to the ordinance passes, Murray says he'll pull out the signs from the closet and put them closer to the street.

"I hear a lot of people say they know that the business is here because of the signs,” said Murray.

City council did approve the first reading of the ordinance, and they will look at the ordinance again at their next meeting on April 10th.

The business corridors affected are:
1. West Villa Maria Road from Finfeather Road to SH 47.
2. FM 2818 (southwest side only) from Villa Maria Road southeastward to the city limits.
3. FM 158 from 200 feet west of the intersection of Villa Maria Road to the city limits at Cole Lane.
