A review of Texas A&M's mascot is nearing completion.

It was in February that the university announced Reveille VII would be retired at the end of the school year, but school officials also formed a committee to examine the future of the mascot, including whether its duties should be changed, or even its breed or species.

Increasing demands on the mascot in the community was part of the reason for the retirement of the current Reveille, and caused university officials to review the work load of the mascot.

According to Vice President for Student Affairs Dean Bresciani, the committee's recommendations should arrive at his desk any day now. Once he and others at the university examine the report, they'll make a decision on the mascot's future and announce it to the public.

A dog named Reveille has been A&M's mascot since 1931, according to the university's website. Reveille III was the first collie to become the First Lady of Aggieland, and it has been a collie ever since.

Reveille VII's last officials duties as mascot will come during the Corps of Cadets' Final Review on May 10.

Nobody cares about a stupid mascot!

is not the collie that is the problem. The last two have been mean and had problems with biting people because of the way she is treated. Dogs of any breed will get away with what they know they can. Proper obdience and handler training would solve the behavior issues not matter what the breed. So keep it a collie, but make sure the collie is properly trained as well as the handlers properly trained

It's is NOT the Collie that's the problem. Collies are a wonderful breed. It's the way she's brought up, in a dorm of teenagers. I breed Champion Collies, and loud noises, etc are not a issue IF the dog is tested for temprement prior to being picked as the mascot. I say keep the Collie, but have her raised by a professional, trained properly, and cut down on the social engagements. There is also a fine Collie Rescue group in Houston. Let's not throw away another tradition, please.

TO "Texas Longhorn", I never thought I would say this but for once in my life I agree with a longhorn. That is a very good idea you have. An ostrich with a rainbow flag would be perfect for those aggies.

I could care less if its a collie, if its for tradition keep the dog, however the 1st reveille wasnt a collie so the breed of the dog shouldnt matter too much, just having the dog...

The last two collies have not been well behaved....change the breed!

Posted by: A&M Administrator on Apr 25, 2008 at 12:19 PM
We need a Pit Bull for a new mascot. Forget the sissy Collie. In fact, let's forget about this whole mascot thing. Just talking about a mascot is a waste of time. This is stupid!

Keep the Collie

A Collie!

Whether A&M chooses a mutt, pure bred collie or any breed,I think it should still come from a shelter.A&M has been known to have one of the finest Vet schools in the world,it would say alot to everyone that sometimes the best animals can be adopted and given a second chance. Gig' em.

First of all I'm all for tradition,so whether they choose a collie or any other breed I don't care.I would hope the powers that be would stop and listen to what some of people from A&M's own vet. school have been trying to tell them for years. Some breeds don't do well with all the stresses of the job. i.e. large crowds, loud noises. Maybe the Corp members in charge of Rev should be required to take "basic" dog psychology, any dog that is allowed to sleep where it wants could have some issues.Remember as much as we love our mascot,it is a dog first and needs to be treated as such.

I think the aggies need to do away with the maroon and white. Their new colors should be the colors of the rainbow to reflect the students orientation. As far as a mascot I think an ostrich would be a good choice. It could bury it's head in the sand and Bevo could have his way with it. Take that mutt to the pound and get you an ostrich. Hook em Bevo!

Texas Aggies... Fight!, Maroon and White, Yell Leaders,Gig em Aggies, Corps of Cadets "keepers of the Spirit".. Miss Rev'mam should remain a Collie - please keep this spirit going..

sam...don't be so boastful.

First of all I have never attended Texas A&M so this really isn't any of my business. It is my opinion that they should keep the collie. That is a beautiful dog and it is a breed I recognize and associate with Texas A&M. A&M is a fine school that is full of tradition. Do you really need to start changing things this late in the game? That's my two cents for what it's worth.

why not have cheerleaders instead of yell leaders? why not just do away with yells period? or even stop the band from playing at half time? what i'm trying to say is Keep the tradition alive at Texas A&M! Why change it? If this is the case Georgia can change their mascot to a miniature poodle, or Texas' bevo to a goat? come on people, this decision is not a hard one. keep reveille a collie!

Posted by: rachel Location: College Station,TX on Apr 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM
I think it would be a good idea to pick a mutt, because that's the kind of dog we had in the first place. Plus, every collie that we've had so far has been mean.

I am sure the university will do what is in the best interest of the school and the students. Gig 'em!

To change the breed or species of Texas A&M Universities Mascot would be a terrible mistake. Changes like thar are what are watering down the true uniqueness and greatness that is Texas A&M University. I will never understand why A&M would even consider being like "all the rest"

Posted by: nzaggie Location: brazos valley on Apr 23, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Why would you want to change the mascot? If a collie has been the mascot why would you change? Do you think Texas is going to follow and change their longhorn, or any of the other big 12 schools or anyone for that fact? You just don't change some things? Why not change the school colors? Why not green and gold? Or blue and black? How about not changing, but adding some actual school spirit traditions? Like passing on some of the "funeral" music at the games? I know that hearing the story of a green baret as sad as that song is just really what will pump up a team and the fans. We need pom girls, cheerleaders, etc. Look at Army they have it all -- Army tradition and spirit.

Pick a mutt with some character instead of a useless pencil-headed show dog.

Posted by: Shannon Location: Bryan on Apr 23, 2008 at 10:23 AM
I thought Texas A & M was about tradition? Has that now changed, then why change the breed of our beloved mascot? To me that is breaking tradition.

Posted by: Monica Location: Bryan on Apr 23, 2008 at 10:16 AM
I'm pulling for the collie!

Posted by: cindy Location: spring on Apr 23, 2008 at 09:45 AM
I think a Golden Retriever would make the perfect mascot. They are beautiful dogs , good natured and extremely smart.

well i can say that i am the one that brought the tradition of A&M having a mascot back to life in 1954. we had no mascot for 8 years so we did not have a tradition at all. we located Reveille ll on the main drill field and started the tradation of Reveille and she was a shetland shepard. the university told me that they did not own the dog so i said, well then A Company Quartermaster does, which is now E2. lets keep a collie as the new mascot and dont believe that stuff that the reason for the committe is to determine what her duties are. when i had Reveille ll the university would not even buy her food. i bought her food. lets not lower the status of the most visible mascot in the nation. keep the collie. when someone hears the name Texas A&M they think of the Corps of Cadets, Reveill and the band. Lets not take another stept backward on the thoughts and traditions of our school..i was the first mascot corporal.

I agree with keeping the Tradition. If there is too demanding a workload from the community, then just say "no" on some occasions to keep the workload manageable. If you want to adopt a mascot, I am sure that there is a 'Collie Rescue' organization that would LOVE the publicity. We are Aggies! We can find a solution and keep the Tradition Alive! Wh'00p!

Pick 3 good candidates from the shelter. Let the students vote for the winner. Makes for good stories later in life. Auction off 2nd, and 3rd with the proceeds to benefit the local shelter. Will certainly raise alot of money from almuni, and sends a good message.

Posted by: keep tradition Location: bryan on Apr 22, 2008 at 04:55 PM
isn't A&M about tradition? keep reveille a collie and keep the tradition going. Even if the first reveille was a mutt, it was not continued and therefor not a tradition, reveille as a collie has been the tradition. Gig'em!

Posted by: Tracey on Apr 22, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Allen -- I totally agree! We always pick our pets from shelters!

Posted by: john Location: College Station on Apr 22, 2008 at 04:12 PM
We could get a bulldog, just to tick off Georgia.

Posted by: Allen Location: B/Cs on Apr 22, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Personally, I'm hoping for a mutt!!! Pick it from the local shelter and watch it become the First Lady of Aggieland! That would be a good rags to riches story.
