Texas A&M has released its recommendations for its next mascot, Reveille VIII. The university will continue with its dog tradition, but the breed is still up in the air.

A&M sent out a memo to students, faculty and staff Thursday describing its study committee process. They have identified the next mascot's essential characteristics:

- Medium to large size dog
- Healthy
- Outgoing personality
- Likes people and at ease in crowds
- Not afraid of noise
- Not highly reactive
- Positively motivated

To read the university's memo in its entirety, click on the link below this story.

There are two recommendations from the committee, both involving mature female dogs with service training. The difference is one recommendation is for a collie-like dog. The other is for a dog with a noble appearance and good physical attributes, not unlike a golden retriever.

"There are, obviously, very structured training organizations that produce those sorts of dogs, and we'll be working through those organizations literally on a national level," said Dean Bresciani, A&M's vice president for student affairs. "There's a network of people who do that sort of thing, so it will be, we hope, a very efficient process."

Reveille VII will be retiring after Final Review. A family for the collie will likely be decided next week.

Bresciani says a puppy will not be chosen as the new mascot due to the training she would have to undergo in order to serve in that role. A service dog at least 18 months old would have less of a learning curve, although the next mascot won't be thrust into her duties full on immediately.

"This mascot is used like no other mascot in the nation, and by no small margin," Bresciani said. "To introduce a dog to that level of activity, in a sense, 100 percent full time level isn't treating the dog as well as it should be treated."

The university hopes to introduce the mascot to the students come this fall.

i agree with Judy. I think it is a great idea to get a healthy outgoing behaved shelter dog.

Hey,"me" in College Station. No doubt you aren't a true Aggie. If you were you'd know how important this issue is to all of us on the inside! You must be an outsider. Didn't you notice that 71% of the people on this site want to keep our mascot a Colle? There are already girls in the band, so what will be next? A girl "cheerleader"? That's a horrible thought. What would happen to A&M's masculinity? If you aren't interested why are you commenting on it? Huh???? Name something more important right now. We want to keep our traditions exactly as they are--no more changes. Get us a Collie!

Posted by: Cares Location: College Station on May 11, 2008 at 08:06 AM
To: me in CS! You must be an outsider looking in if you think nobody cares about this subject. There are thousands of us who care. 71% who have voted on the subject want Reveille to remain a collie. You just don't get it! By the way, are you a sip?????

KEEP TRADITIONS OR CHANGE THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL WHY DONT YOU..?

nobody cares, there are a lot more important this to be concerned with.

An 18 month old dog is still a puppy in some breeds of dogs.

Posted by: charles Location: aggieland on May 8, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Hey, I got an idea:Lets change the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean L Bresciani, he's the one wanting to change the collie. The collie has been around longer than him, along with other traditions, ie. Sul Ross statue, ring dance, muster, elephant walk, FISH Camp, midnight yell- and oh yea, the contributions of Aggie Alum. Come on Aggies - stick up for our TRADITIONS, remember: From the outside looking in, they never understand it.

This is what we spend our tax dollars for. Deciding what type of mascot to have after A L L of these years. I hope the university doesn't have a REAL important decision to get involved in!!!

Stick with tradition, stay with a Collie

I vote for a 'non-collie'. When the first Rev collie came along, it was before Lassie and collies weren't inbred yet. The last two dogs have been definitely overbred and stupid and mean. Knew them personally. German Shepherd, Aussie, border collie, heck, get a dachshund.

Posted by: James Location: College Station on May 6, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Rev 1 was a mutt, why don't we resue a puppy from the pound and train it? Saving a dog from the death penalty sounds tough. Getting a pampered pure breed makes A&M look like a bunch of goody two shoes that would not dare bring a mutt on campus. get a tough looking mutt not a Collie the Golden Retreiver, or a Hound dog sounds good.

I think after all these years of our mascot being a Collie, it would be ridiculous to use a different breed. Just think, someday you’ll be watching the Antique Road Show and they’ll pull out an old ceramic collie wearing a maroon jersey. Some antique expert will say, “Yes sir, this seems to be memorabilia from Texas A&M. This artifact dates back to the early 1900’s, back when they gave a damn about honor and tradition”. In the instance that we were to have another breed, a German Sheppard would be awesome. They’re trainable, good with people, they’re tough and a mascot we could be proud of… but keep the Collie.

Posted by: KTT Location: Caldwell on May 6, 2008 at 01:20 PM
I don't know if any of you watch "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Milan but he is awesome. According to him, any dog can live in a calm, submissive state and be well adjusted. So, I say keep the collie and hire Cesar to train the dog and it's handler. Keep the tradition - keep the collie! WHOOP!!

Posted by: Cecelia Location: Bryan on May 6, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Why in the world are they trying to change traditions? Tradition is so important here and, yet, the powers that be just erode those more and more. Since they picked the Collie many years ago, that should stand. (We had a similar mutt to the first Reville at Sam Houston. Tripod was beloved all over Huntsville.) I'm not a big fan of Collies or the other dogs mentioned, personally. My choice would be a beautiful Olde English Sheepdog. But, I wouldn't even consider trying to force my preference as a choice when a Collie has become part of this school's tradition. Long live tradition!

Texas A&M = Tradition Collie = Tradition Keep our tradition! I'm not saying everyone understands A&M and the traditions, but those of us who are Aggies know the importance. We are unique and others envy our collected togetherness that is defined by tradition. Let's keep ourselves defined by our own traditions and not change a good thing. Reveille is a Collie by tradition and should stay that way. WHOOP!!!!!! What will be next? De-standardizing the Aggie Ring, Cancelling Ring Dance, doing away with Midnight Yell, Stopping Muster... Those who choose to serve Texas A&M in leadership roles were attracted to our reputation. Don't change the things you loved about our great school. Perhaps other universities would look more attractive to you if you have little respect for tradition. TRADITION: It's an Aggie thing!

Posted by: ashley Location: bryan on May 5, 2008 at 04:28 PM
My grandfather was a Dean at A&M for many years and I can remember taking pictures with Reveille when I was 8 or 9 to change the breed would change the memories that I grew up with and that would be a horrible mistake. I don't want to think that just becuase a bad experience the NEW president would go and change many many years of TRADITION that the AGGIES have been so proud of. Do the right thing and keep the TRUE AGGIE SPIRIT alive with a collie. We have prided ourselves with Tradition and now someone is trying to change that boo to those who think its okay. I say keep Reveille reveille and thats that. No one in their right mind should think another dog is okay. We started out with a mutt but someone came up with the idea of a collie and thats how it should stay. I can honestly say that I have been an Aggie for many years. Just please keep the collie or A&M will never be the same. For another instance you saw what canceling the Bonfire did to us. So what for Traditions, huh. WHOOP!!!!

I would like to offer a AKC Registered Collie as a donation for your mascot. I have had collie's for almost twenty years and have three male collies left. Please email me if you are intersted they are now ten weeks old. They are going quickly!

Posted by: Class of "93 Location: Caldwell on May 5, 2008 at 11:43 AM
We should keep a Collie. I do agree in going with an older dog and not a puppy. At the older age, their temperament is easier to determine. No matter the dog, it is the temperament that makes the difference. If a dog, even a pit bull, has the right temperament, it can be a GREAT dog. Stick with the collie! Yes, we started with a mut, but we made the decision year ago to change. Now, it is tradition, so don't throw away those years of tradition. After all, our tradition is one of our defining characteristics.

I was thinking of other school mascots. If UT were to change to a Jersey cow instead of a Longhorn it would be quite a difference. A dog is not just another dog any more than a cow is just any cow.

Posted by: terrihall Location: College station on May 5, 2008 at 10:22 AM
The most impressive quality of Texas A&M is TRADITION. I was sad to loose Bonfire on campus, now do we loose Reveille? Are you going to eventually make the Corp of Cadets an extra-curricular activity? I have a suspicion that these ideas were made by someone whom did not graduate from A&M. So, if you want to "change" something, why not change your address to a school that appreciates it and leave TRADITIONS AT TEXAS A&M alone.

I think a Golden Retriever would be an excellant choice for mascot for TAMU. They are a wonderful breed, very outgoing, they love people, are very easily trained, and beautiful to look at. I personally have 2 rescued Goldens and couldn't be happier with them. Goldens love people and would be perfect in the role of mascot. Our local rescue no longer exists, but there are rescues in Houston and Austin that have the perfect dog just waiting to win over the entire studetn population and Aggies everywhere.

1. What hateful comments from the TU guy. He has no class. 2. One year does not make a tradition, but 30 or 40 years does. 3. Changing from the collie would make it hard on all the current and past merchandising that showcases the collie. 4. Keep the collie. She is beautiful.

To: Just Wondering. That's exactly the point, this controversy is just as far-fetched as a Papillon being able to type!

Posted by: Troy Location: Caldwell on May 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Seems to me that the tradition was changed when A&M first brought in the collie. The original Reveille was a mutt. I think the officials should go to the animal shelter and pick a pup with a good attitude so it would be assured a good home.

Posted by: Just wondering.. Location: College Station on May 3, 2008 at 01:16 PM
Hmmmm, Madeleine, you say "We were good enough for the royalty in France and England"...are you saying that you are a Papillon??? Hmm, I didnt know that papillons could type..

Posted by: Victoria Location: College Station on May 3, 2008 at 12:56 PM
I really hope that TAMU stays with either a Collie or Border collie

Posted by: Madeleine Location: Madisonville on May 3, 2008 at 12:10 PM
I think you are dicriminating against other breeds of dogs by recommending a collie like or lab breed. Why not a Papillon? We were good enough for the royalty in France and England, so why not for A & M?

Posted by: Ann Location: Madisonville on May 3, 2008 at 11:56 AM
The collie is the universal symbol of Texas A & M. If we change to a different breed of dog, then what other traditions are we going to change at A & M?

Posted by: Proud American Location: College Station on May 3, 2008 at 09:53 AM
To: University of Texas Longhorn. Lets get one thing straight ok? Texas A&M is not Texas Agricultural & Mechanical anymore, that went out in the 60's ok? 2nd, A&M will never change its colors, ok? Yes, we are multi-cultural, people from all over the world come here to go to school. 3rd, and that dumb comment you made about a ostrich burying its head in the sand so that bevo (little b) could have its way?...There is a hamburger here that is called the bevo burger, ....since you were stuck in the 60's a few mins ago...I will now remind you when some Ags brought bevo back to A&M for a bevo bbq!....you have something else to say now???

Posted by: jenn Location: College Station on May 2, 2008 at 09:14 PM
While I'll miss the Collie mascot that I went to school with....it will be really interesting to see what is chosen. Please do NOT pick a fat ugly bulldog...LOL

Posted by: Anonymous on May 2, 2008 at 08:23 PM
i know this is bias but i think the most informed people on the Rrveille selection should be the past mascot corporals..i was the first mascot corporal and had Reveille ll. i think that the tradition of Reveille is mis understood by most. call me at 6906303 and i will fill u in.

Posted by: University of Texas Longhorn Location: Austin on May 2, 2008 at 07:40 PM
The best mascot for Texas agricultural and mechanical university is the ostrich. The ostrich could bury it's head in the sand and Bevo could have his way with it. Texas agricultural and mechanical university should change it's schools colors from white and maroon to the colors of the rainbow. The rainbow colors would accurately reflect the orientation of the student body at Texas agricultural and mechanical university.

A Sheltie will fit the bill.

As a member of the former student alumni, I will be very disappointed if Reveille does not remain a collie. All of my memorabilia is of a collie. Whatever happened to TAMU being about traditions????

Posted by: Roger Location: Texas on May 2, 2008 at 04:27 PM
These are some links that might be of interest to those wishing to see what kind of a dog might be chosen out of the 155 breeds available and also some to the people here in this area who work with dogs. It is amazing to see some of the strange dogs that could be brought in as a mascot under the recomendations. http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm http://www.brazosvalleykennelclub.info/BVKC.html http://www.brazosvalleykennelclub.info/ At least the committee didn't recomend going with any poultry.

Posted by: Donna Location: Hearne on May 2, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Put the names of dog breeds in a hat and pick one - it really doesn't make any difference.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: College Station on May 2, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Please keep the Collie. No one bothers to mention the idea that a Collie is what everyone outside of A&M knows as OUR mascot. It is also about the recognition from other schools that is important. Why is this something that is even being considered?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 2, 2008 at 01:25 PM
And people wonder why I quit contributing money to A&M...This is a prime example of how much money they waste. This reminds me of when so much money was spent to change the name of the Ag department from Agriculture to AgriLife...and whew that has made such a difference I am so glad that was fixed. If you want to change the breed - do a survey, figure out what the student body and alumni want and get it. Now how does that need a special committee and report?

Posted by: Julie Location: College Station on May 2, 2008 at 01:13 PM
A&M must have liked something about the collie or else Revs 3-7 would've been different breeds. Collies where used to heard farmers livestock and sheep to markets in Britain.

Posted by: Vickie Location: College Station on May 2, 2008 at 01:07 PM
I think it should remain a collie. Why change? Every dog has a different personality. Just because they had some bad experiences with one dog doesn't mean the entire breed is a problem. I do agree that getting an older dog will help with behavior problems, but please keep it a collie.

Posted by: David Location: Anderson on May 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM
A&M always speaks of it's tradition and at the same time are always changing.Let the Collie be.

Posted by: FIDO Location: A&M on May 2, 2008 at 08:41 AM
Why are those our only choices? The described characteristics can apply to lots of breeds including mixed breed rescue dogs! I'm tired of people claiming they want a Collie because of tradition. If tradition were really important, they'd go back to what the original Reveille looked like which was NOT a Collie nor Retriever!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 2, 2008 at 08:25 AM
Why not go back to the original dog and get a mutt. There are plenty of good animals at the shelter that are put down because they don't have homes.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 2, 2008 at 08:22 AM
The poll should have a place for us to put in a breed's name - I vote for an Australian Shepard or a Blue Heeler - a good cattle dog against BEVO!

Posted by: Michelle Location: College Station on May 1, 2008 at 10:18 PM
The first reveille was a mix breed with black lab. Everyone says tradition well that is tradition. Down the road or the second Reveille changed that tradition when a collie was named as the mascot. So to go back to tradition a black lab or chocolate lab mix should be the next Reveille not a Collie. That is my opinion. Labs also have a better personality than collies they calmer and even tempered when it comes to being around a large amount of people. And a lab any type of labs are great with kids. So go back to tradition with the first Reveille.

Posted by: Judy Location: Bryan on May 1, 2008 at 10:16 PM
I would like to see them adopt a shelter dog.

Posted by: Kyle (Class of 2003) Location: Bryan on May 1, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Keep a Collie. The recent administrations at Texas A&M seem to want to get rid of every tradition that has made A&M what it is. What’s next? Get rid of the yell leaders and replace them with cheerleaders? Wait a minute, that’s already slowly being done.

Posted by: SAM Location: COLLEGE STATION on May 1, 2008 at 08:23 PM
I AM PLEASED WITH THE DECISION AND WANT TO THANK ALL THAT SUPPORTED THE COLLIE..A SHETLAND SHEPARD WOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE BUT THEY ARE VERY HARD TO FIND. I AM NOT SURE THAT I AGREE WITH NOT GETTING A PUPPY BUT HEY, YOU CAN WIN THEM ALL. WE ALL HAVE A TRADITION TO UPHOLD AND HAVE A MASCOT THAT WILL REPSENT ALL AGGIES.

Posted by: John Location: college station on May 1, 2008 at 06:33 PM
What kind of a mascot is a dog anyway? How does a DOG represent an Aggie? HUMMM!!!

Posted by: Cheryl Location: College Station on May 1, 2008 at 05:02 PM
I can understand them wanting a kinder more adaptable dog, but I do hope they stick with a Collie or Border Collie that resembles all the of merchandising that has been done for many years reflecting on Rev the Collie!
