A Friday conference call with Texas A&M regents could lead to the naming of a new vice president for student affairs at the College Station campus.

A&M President Elsa Murano announced retired Marine Corps Lieutenant General Joseph Weber will be her recommendation to regents. News 3 first reported Weber was a top candidate.

Weber most recently served as commander of Marine Forces Command. Weber graduated from Texas A&M and was commissioned in 1972. A classmate of his was Texas Governor Rick Perry.

"Support for Mr. Weber has come via recommendations from numerous former students and friends of Texas A&M," Murano said in a statement. "Through my personal interactions with him in recent days, I have experienced firsthand the passion and energy he will bring to Student Affairs, and I truly believe he is the right person to serve in this capacity at this time in our university’s history."

A link to Murano's full statement is below.

The Board of Regents will recess to executive session near the beginning of its 9 a.m. meeting, with the only item on the agenda being a discussion on the open vice presidential spot.

Dean Bresciani resigned his post in late June after he was asked to step down by university leaders, that according to an internal e-mail. Bresciani had been with Texas A&M since 2004.

David Parrott, Bresciani's number two, has been serving as the interim vice president.

Well, I think Murano is doing alright. At least we'll have an Aggie back in there who understands stuff. Bonfire was such a unifying experience for corps, nonregs, and Greeks. Don't slam the man until he does something stupid.

What a pathetic day in the history of A&M. The president has shown that she will grovel at the feet of the guv. But after the farcical way she was "proclaimed" president, it's not surprising. I'm ashamed of her and more ashamed that the tenured faculty of this university sit around and let political hacks run the school. Hey profs -- one of the reasons you get tenure is to make sure that politicians like Perry don't run the University as their own little fiefdom. Get off your lazy butts and do something worthwhile while you have a chance. So far, he's put in his former chief of staff as Chancellor, his ex-lawyer as the head regent, his political crony as president and now this. The school is becoming a laughingstock among those who have figured out what's going on. Get to work, faculty members.

After this announcement I really miss Dean Bresciani. I still think the wrong person was asked to step down. When will A&M wake up.

I am sure Weber will also support the return of bonfire on campus since he is such a big supporter of Aggie traditions! I doubt he would have been selected if he was opposed to it. Someday when it is back we will look really dumb in the eyes of the rest of the nation.

Elsa, who do you think wants your job once he loses the governor's election to Kay Bailey Hutchinson? Watch your back, with this last appointment he is setting his plan in motion. His board of regent appointments are not only friends, they're allies.

Sorry, mom -- he can't be much of a Marine if he can't get a job without begging his old roomie to fire someone so he could take the job. This should be a scandal, but KBTX and The Eagle will just let it go on by.

I don't think you need a Phd to work w/ student affairs. I'm thinking dealing w/ thousands of marines could possibly make u a good candidate in dealing w/ Aggies.

It's odd...President Murano sent out a way-too-long email message to the university trying to explain her rationale. In doing so, she essentially described firing the very person already doing the things she wanted to hire someone else to do. The logic can't be explained. It comes down to the position being a political appointee. Dr. Murano has no credibility at this point as a leader...her decision making has been usurped by the governor. Rudder Tower isn't where university leadership resides. Orders are now coming from Austin and apparently they are being obeyed.
