The Texas A&M Board of Regents has approved retired Marine Lieutenant General Joseph Weber as the new vice president for student affairs at the College Station campus.

Weber, who recently retired after 36 years of military service, is a Texas A&M grad. He last served as the commander of Marine Forces Command, where more than 70,000 Marines answered to him.

Shortly after News 3 reported Weber was a top candidate for the position, A&M President Elsa Murano announced her recommendation of Weber for the job.

"He believes in teamwork and in the leadership that comes from serving side by side with others," Murano said in a statement Thursday. "Given the outstanding group of professionals in our Division of Student Affairs, I have no doubt he has a team that can help support him with direct experience in this field that will complement his own.

"In fact, Joe’s background in fiscal management and strategic planning should bring a new perspective to Student Affairs that can provide innovative approaches to enhancing the functions of the Division to the benefit of our students," she continued.

Since the recommendation, a number of students have voiced displeasure with the selection process, saying a proper search was not conducted. Students voiced their concerns prior to the regents' decision Friday.

Dean Bresciani, the former vice president for student affairs, resigned his post in June. An internal e-mail from A&M stated Bresciani was asked to resign by university leadership. He had been with A&M for four years.

How do you come to the decision that a man with 35 years leading young men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 has NO experience? Budgets, interactions with foreign nationals, strategic planning, news flash, Marine officers do that. What is pathetic is that being an Aggie is now an automatic disqualification for some of you. How closed minded of you who have not yet met General Weber, but have dubbed him "not qualified". Thanks for being so open minded.. Sad day for the university alright, but not because of his selection.

What a pathetic day in the history of A&M. The president has shown that she will grovel at the feet of the guv. But after the farcical way she was "proclaimed" president, it's not surprising. I'm ashamed of her and more ashamed that the tenured faculty of this university sit around and let political hacks run the school. Hey profs -- one of the reasons you get tenure is to make sure that politicians like Perry don't run the University as their own little fiefdom. Get off your lazy butts and do something worthwhile while you have a chance. So far, he's put in his former chief of staff as Chancellor, his ex-lawyer as the head regent, his political crony as president and now this. The school is becoming a laughingstock among those who have figured out what's going on. Get to work, faculty members.

I am truly concerned with Dr. Murano's decision to recommend General Joseph Weber as our VPSA. I feel as if this process, if it can be called one, was done in secrecy. By making a hasty decision during the summer months I feel as if it was done because the decision was bound to be protested if students were present. If students had the opportunity to know all details, this candidate would not be recommended by the students. Texas A&M's Division of Student Affairs is one of the top 5 in the nation. With this appointment we just handed that title to another school. General Weber has no experience in Student Affairs which will cause A&M to loose credibility in the Student Affairs profession. Thank you Dr. Murano for pushing us further from Vision 2020. Does Dr. Murano really care about the student input? I want to believe that she does, but the information I have been provided speaks to the contrary.

I am very disappointed in this decision. This was a serious slap in the face to students at A&M by Dr. Murano.

"experience in this field that will complement his own" How do you complement NO experience?

what happened to all the comments questioning this appointment? Truth and tradition part of the Aggie culture just got wash down the drain by those claiming to know what it means

Done deal and all we can hope for is the best. Give the guy a chance. If he loves A&M and understands the traditions and has led many young people....I say give him a chance.
