Unitarian Universalist Church: The Crisis of Civilization

Mar 7, 2013 6:30 PM

Unitarian Universalist Church of the Brazos Valley at 305 Wellborn Road in College Station, TX
The Crisis of Civilization is a documentary feature film investigating how global crises like ecological disaster, financial meltdown, dwindling oil reserves, and terrorism and food shortages are converging symptoms of a single, failed global system. It will be shown at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Brazos Valley at 305 Wellborn Road in College Station, TX on Thursday, 7 March at 6:30 pm. The film is based on A User's Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save it, a well-researched, well-reasoned, engaging and powerful book by Nafeez Ahmed, the Executive Director of the Institute for Policy Research and Development.

The 77-minute film reveals how a failure to understand the systemic context of these crises, linked to neoliberal ideology, has generated a tendency to deal not with their root structural causes, but only with their symptoms. This has led to the proliferation of war, terror, and state-terror, including encroachment on civil liberties, while accelerating global crises rather than solving them. The real solution, Nafeez argues, is to recognize the inevitability of civilizational change, and to work toward a fundamental systemic transformation based on more participatory forms of living, politically, economically and culturally.

The solution is possible if people choose to become educated and to engage in intentional communities. The low-budget film is available to stream online without charge at http://crisisofcivilization.com/

Please join us for the screening to watch the film in fellowship and engage in lively discussion after the movie. Email Emily at ebritt@gmail.com for more details or with any questions.

LOVE MAKES A FAMILY: NATIONALLY-TOURING EXHIBIT CONFRONTS PREJUDICE

Exhibit of portraits and stories from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families visits the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Brazos Valley.

At a time in history when LGBT people continue to fight for basic human rights and in the Bryan-College Station community where exhibits of this sort are rare, LOVE MAKES A FAMILY: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families cuts through the political arguments and right to the heart of the issue by showing the qualities of compassion and connection that are common to all loving families. The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Brazos Valley in collaboration with the Pride Community Center will host this exhibit on several dates through the month of October. Special events for the exhibition include an opening reception with free professional portraits for attending LGBT families, a Coming Out panel discussion, and a pizza party.

The Stokes family exemplifies the love on display at the LOVES MAKES A FAMILY exhibit.

The exhibition of LOVE MAKES A FAMILY: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families will kick off with an opening reception at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Friday, October 12, 6-9pm. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and music while touring the exhibit. From 6:00 - 7:30pm LGBT-supporting individuals, couples and families in attendance will have the opportunity to sit with a professional photographer for a free portrait. On Saturday, October 13, 1-3pm, the Pride Community Center will present a panel discussion on LGBT Coming Out. Attendees can meet with panelists during the refreshment reception following the panel. A pizza party will be held for students at 5 pm on Thursday, October 18th. The full list of open times for the exhibit at the Unitarian Universalist Church includes the following:

Friday, October 12th, 6-9 pm
Saturday, October 13th, 1-4 pm
Sunday, October 14th, 2-5 pm
Thursday, October 18th, 4-7 pm
Friday, October 19th, 6-9 pm
Sunday, October 21st, 2-5 pm

For more information, see the UU Church website at http://www.brazosuu.org or the Pride Community Center website at http://pridecc.org/. Internet browsers can view images, interviews, and other information about the LOVE MAKES A FAMILY exhibit and book at www.familydiv.org.

Ric Dorsey Benefit

Aug 4, 2012 5 PM

Madisonville, TX
Ric Dorsey Benefit

Ric Dorsey, the Worship Minister at Faith Baptist Church Madisonville, was diagnosed with colon cancer on July 6, 2012. He is 39 years old. Ric is married to Salena and has three young children. He has been a resident of Madisonville for twelve years. His wife, Salena (Whitworth), grew up in Leona, Texas.

Ric is a devoted husband and father who loves the Lord and has spent many years serving him in the music ministry. He is a living example of the teachings of Jesus concerning putting the needs of others ahead of his own.

The Faith Baptist Church will be hosting a benefit for the Dorsey family at the Truman Kimbro Center in Madisonville on Saturday, August 4th at 5:00pm. This fundraiser will help offset the staggering medical bills that come with treating cancer and time away from work. Ric and his wife do not have health insurance and Faith Baptist wants to help lift that burden. Dinner, music, and a silent auction will all be part of the evening. All are welcome, any donation is appreciated.
Donations can be made at Wells Fargo through the Richard Dorsey Benefit Fund. For more information on how to help you can contact Brian Smith, the Pastor of Faith Baptist Church at brian@faithmadisonville.com.

Thank you for opening your hearts to this wonderful family and may the Lord bless you.
