2013 Government-In-Action Youth Tour

Mar 1, 2013 N/A

2013 Youth Tour June 13-21 Washington DC
YOUTH TOUR HISTORY

The Youth Tour was born from comments made by Senator Lyndon Johnson as he addressed the NRECA Annual meeting in Chicago in 1957. Beginning that year, and for several more, some of the Texas electric cooperatives sent groups of young people to Washington to work during the summer in Senator Johnson’s office to learn about government in action. In 1964, NRECA began to coordinate the program suggesting that the groups arrange their schedules to be in the city the same week. During the first year of the coordinated tour, there were about 400 young people from 12 states. Since that time, the Youth Tour has continued to grow, and for the last few years almost 1,400 young people and chaperones have participated in the Tour each year. Texas Electric Cooperatives began a similar coordination in 1965.

Third Annual Lemonade Day

May 5, 2013 All Day

Community Wide
The BrightMinds Foundation, Inc. will host the third annual Lemonade Day BCS on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Lemonade Day is a free community-wide program dedicated to teaching children how to start, own and operate their own business through the simple and time-honored act of building and running a lemonade stand. Lemonade Day provides kids with free materials and support thanks to local sponsors, who recognize the benefits of teaching business skills early.

This year, the goal of Lemonade Day is to have over 1,500 local entrepreneurs between the ages of 5-16 hit the streets on May 5 for a free and fun learning program. Lemonade Day enables kids to experientially learn real-life skills by starting, owning and operating their own business, giving them the opportunity to “spend a little, save a little, and share a little,” donating a portion of their profits to a local charity of choice. After covering their expenses and paying back their investors, children are encouraged to open a youth savings account.

Copy Corner Founder/President Larry Hodges on being a 2013 Lemonade Day BCS Community Champion:

As an entrepreneur, I believe that Lemonade Day represents and simplifies what our great country is all about; having a dream, making a plan and then having the drive and entrepreneurial spirit to go out and do it.

On Lemonade Day, everyone has a job - either buying or selling lemonade. All those in the communities of Bryan and College Station are encouraged to simply purchase a cup of lemonade from at least one child participating in the program to demonstrate how our community cares for its future.

ABOUT LEMONADE DAY

Lemonade Day is a part of Prepared 4 Life, a non-profit organization that provides fun, proactive and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education and entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day was born in Houston, Texas in 2007 and was inspired by the lessons local entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Holthouse taught his young daughter and her friend when they setup and lemonade stand. Since then it has grown to a nationwide program, and this year Lemonade Day will expand to 30 cities.

SIGN UP AND LEARN MORE To sign up or learn more about ways that everyone can get involved in Lemonade Day, May 5, 2013, please visit LemonadeDayBCS.org. For information about sponsorship, partnerships, or donations, please contact Rose Selman.

BBB TO HONOR DESERVING COMPANIES

College Station, TX 77840
The Better Business Bureau is soliciting nominations for the BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. The Torch Award is the highest honor the BBB can give to a deserving business. It is an award that crosses all industry and product lines and centers solely on ethical behavior in the marketplace. Since ethics is not a function of size, no business is too large or too small to be considered.

Consumers look for certain traits in the companies where they work and that they patronize. Some of those traits include high ethical standards in dealing with customers, employees, and suppliers; effective, straight-forward advertising; friendly, helpful employees; or simply a good reputation built by a history of solid business practices within the community. These are some of the same things the BBB is looking for in a Torch Award recipient.

The best way to show appreciation to a business is to continue to be a loyal patron and/or employee. But why not recognize your favorite place for its efforts? Let the whole community know the business is deserving by submitting a nomination for the Torch Award.

The award is open for all for-profit businesses that serve retail and wholesale markets. Non-profits are not eligible. No business is too large or too small to be considered. The award is categorized so that a 2-employee company does not have to compete with a 150-employee company. BBB accreditation is not a requirement; however, the business’s business review with the BBB will be considered in the selection process. Self-nominations are not accepted.

Last year’s winners include BMI Defense Systems, Readfield Meats & Deli, University Title Company and Aggieland Automotive

A nomination form is available on the BBB website, www.bryan.bbb.org or may also be obtained at the BBB office by calling 979-260-2222 or 1-800-392-3798. Deadline for submission is March 15, 2013.

The presentations will be at a luncheon in late spring.

For further information, call Bill McGuire, President, 979-846-0099 or 800-392-3798 or you may write: 418 Tarrow, College Station, TX 77840

Children's Grief Awareness Day

Nov 15, 2012 All Day

We are holding a Blue Candlelight vigil at Central Park from 6:00 - 7:30.
What is Children’s Grief Awareness Day?
• Children’s Grief Awareness Day is observed the Thursday before Thanksgiving every year. In 2012, this day will be November 15.
• Children’s Grief Awareness Day is a day focused on bringing to mind the children all around us who have experienced the death of a loved one—child who typically feel very alone in the journey of grief.
• Children’s Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to let grieving children know that they’re not forgotten in the midst of their grief.

How are we contributing to Children’s Grief Awareness Day?
• We are asking everyone in the community to wear blue on that day and let people know why they are wearing blue.
• We are holding a Blue Candlelight vigil at Central Park from 6:00 - 7:30.

How can you help us?
• We would love to have professionals volunteer their time for on-site assistance with children or families that need help.
• We would love assistance on planning activities for the children.
Any activity or activities that are designed to help the child move forward in their grieving process would be great.
• We would love for an inspirational speaker to hold a 10 – 15 minute speech to relate to the children that it’s ok to grieve and that it will get easier. If you have any leads on this that would be very beneficial.

Why are we holding in this event?
• Many people don’t realize that it takes most children much longer to deal with their grief then we expect, and that the amount of inner turmoil, invisible to most, is much more intense than we have any idea of.
• We want to raise awareness so that people will realize that even if there is no outward sign of inner turmoil, those storms can still be raging inside a grieving child’s heart.
• We raise awareness so that people will understand that a grieving child can’t just “get over it”—not in any set time period—not by any act of their own will—and that there’s no reason that they should just “get over it.”
• We want to raise awareness in order to help people learn ways they might help a grieving child they happen to know, now or in the future.
