Symposium: Poetics Versus Philosophy: Life, Artifact, and Theory
Apr 11, 2013 - Apr 13, 2013 8 - 11 PM
Grand Stafford Theatre, Bryan, TX
http://dhsym13.tamu.edu/
Poets from 15 countries read their work 8 - 11 PM. Saturday, April 13 at the Grand Stafford Theater, Bryan -- sponsored by Advent GX. Open to public.
The Department of Hispanic Studies, along with the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas will host a three-day symposium titled Poetics Versus Philosophy: Life, Artifact, and Theory on April 11-13, 2013.
Since Plato, the controversy between poetry and the philosophical project has been legendary, repeated in multiple variations throughout history until the present day. This initial antagonistic gesture by the ancient philosopher against poets, can perhaps lead us to expand our range of reflection about crucial topics today, regarding for example; the semantic and syntactic mysteries of artistic and scientific artifacts, or the imaginary value that dwells within theoretical speculation. Creating an interdisciplinary dialogue between fields such as art and architecture, philosophy, political and natural sciences, poetical and literary studies is unavoidable. The unresolved ancestral conflict between poetry and rational knowledge must be restated in the XXI Century, and serve as a metaphor around which this symposium is conceived.
Marjorie Perloff – Keynote Speaker
Invited Speakers: Charles Bernstein, Ida Vitale, Robert Anthony Siegel

An educational experience awaits your child at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History’s annual Summer Nature Camps! Studying science and history helps children to know and understand the world around them. The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History offers children this opportunity in a safe, fun, and educational setting. Through non-traditional teaching techniques, campers are encouraged to explore science, animal behavior, history, and their local environment using interactive lessons and educational games and crafts.
The Museum facilities include classroom areas, the Discovery Room, and a 40-acre park, all used to enhance children’s’ learning experience. Our staff members are experienced teachers and, to ensure personalized instruction, classes are kept small, with a teacher to student ratio of 1:10. Of course, this means classes fill up quickly, so do not wait to register!
This year’s weekly themes include: exploring the milky way; art in nature; slugs and bugs; pirates; egyptian mysteries; prehistoric pals; going green; engineering for kids; and zoology 101. The summer extension day camp from August 19-23th explores your senses (sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch)!
Regular admission to the Museum and the Museum’s permanent galleries and traveling exhibits is $5 for adults; $4 for children, students, and seniors. Members and children 3 and under are free. The Museum, located in the Brazos Center on Briarcrest Drive, is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5pm. Start: Running Brushy Middle School, Cedar Park, TX
Finish: Pillar Bluff Vineyards/Texas Legato Winery, Lampasas, TX
The Texas 4000 for Cancer ATLAS Ride, now in its ninth year, features 25-, 50-, and 70-mile routes that wind through the scenic countryside and end at the beautiful Pillar Bluff Vineyards located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, where there will be a large pavilion and stage for local entertainment, good ol’ Texas barbecue, and much more. Riders and attendees are also welcome to take a tour of the award-winning Texas Legato Winery! Full SAG, rest stops, and mechanical support will be provided throughout the day.
Each year, Texas 4000 for Cancer, a University of Texas at Austin student-led non-profit organization, sends a cycling team more than 4,500 miles on the world’s longest charitable ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska to spread the organization’s three pillars of Hope, Knowledge, and Charity across the North American continent. The ride is the accumulation of a year and half of hard work and dedication to the cause by the riders, since the team takes responsibility for planning the entire trip, from plotting turn-by-turn directions of the routes and building relationships with host families to seeking out communities and hospitals to present cancer awareness programs and share personal cancer experiences with others affected by the disease.
Come cycle the first day of the seventy-day journey with the LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 Team and join us in the fight against cancer! Early registration ends on March 3rd!
Until March 3rd: $50
