Thursday night hundreds of Grimes County residents wanted to make sure TxDOT heard them loud and clear: no Trans-Texas Corridor on their land. The state has proposed building I-69 through Walker and Grimes Counties, but the road received a chilly reception at a public hearing in Navasota.

If there was any question about where Grimes County stands on the issue of the Trans-Texas Corridor, the signs and the folks at the door could help clear that up. Around 550 people packed into the Grimes County Expo Center, and 60 signed up to talk. Chances are, the employees at TxDOT have heard it all before, but they listened anyway. "People get very animated you might say and very upset. A lot of this land has been in their families for many many years," said Bob Colwell of TxDOT.

"Its analogous to taking an old historic quilt that your great grandmother made and cutting it up and using it for a dust rag. Why in the world?" said one speaker.

The public hearing was standing room only, and no one seemed to be standing in favor of the super highway. "I never knew that my parenting skills would be needed as Grimes County Judge, but what part of no don't you understand?" said Betty Shiflett.

"Most of the people in grimes county don't want it at all, but if you're gonna build it, use some common sense and follow what we've already got," said another resident. It was a sentiment echoed by several people.

"I believe we can use existing Highways and that we should use existing highways," said a speaker. TxDOT employees couldn't respond to the comments, but the opinions will be sent to Austin to become part of the public record. Whether or not they pave the way for change remains to be seen.

TxDot will hold its next public forum Monday in Bryan, at the Civic Auditorium. The open house will start at five, with public comments beginning at 6:30.

I want no part of the TTC,my Father and Mother grew up in Bedias Grimes County and would be ashamed our govenor is out to steal their heritage. We have to stop this landgrab.

I beleif that Tx Dot Is making a profit from this Historical land grab. Which displaces Descendant family's of the Republic of Texas who fought to see Texas /Tejas Free and Independant. Our forefathers believed that their future generations would live on lands that they spill their blood for.We as Citizens should stand guard on our land's that we are made to pay taxes on for who to profit not the people but the government who mandates taxes, toll's, insurance and now we the people are told we want this to go thru it's good for the State No way should we believe this our air quality will be low the eco system will change the water quality will go bad from the pollution of added trucking we need to support our State representatives who are fighting for us right now against TX Dot to see the citizens keep Texas free for all

Posted by: George Location: Houston on Mar 6, 2008 at 09:05 PM
Why should us taxpayers pay some foreign entity 12 percent guaranteed to handle this project when the Harris County Toll Road Authority has demonstrated that it can be done quite well locally? Not very many people seem to be aware of this part of this fiasco. Lets publisize it more.

Texans have been sold out to big business and foreign interest by our elected officials. Texans must and will stand together to take back our government and elect responsible representation with the best interests of the citizens of Texas in mind. I am supporting the "NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE"

There is an alternative to taking the rural farms for your TX Dot Corridor. Expand your 59 that you still have not completed and must complete. I live about 6 miles north from the I10 highway and can hear the noise that comes with our southerly breezes. What do you think the noise pollution will become for people who have chosen to move from such? I do not want any of your proposed Texas Corridors.

TXDOT - Don't Mess With Texas!!!!!

Posted by: Stephennie Anderson Location: Harris County on Mar 3, 2008 at 08:39 PM
I can't imagine why TxDOT and our politicians are in favor of TTC/I-69 unless there is something in it for them. The environmental impact is enormous, not to mention our national security and overall quality of life. I am supporting the NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE.

Posted by: Marianne Location: Bellville on Mar 3, 2008 at 03:50 PM
This highway needs to be stopped now. Stealing of private property to further enrich politicians and foreign companies is totally in conflict with the values of the Republic of Texas.

Posted by: Kirsten Location: Waller on Mar 3, 2008 at 02:53 PM
I am ashamed to know that I voted for the current politicians and if nothing else comes out of this mess, I hope that people will be more educated about who they vote for, and stay tuned to what they are doing once in office!!!! We turn a blind eye once they are in office and their decisions go unchallenged by us. Make sure you vote!!!

At what point are we going to stop developing Texas? When she has no more beautiful land or wildlife left? Say NO to TTC/I-69 and say yes to keeping Texas' wide open spaces!

Posted by: Ed Location: Pattison on Mar 3, 2008 at 01:55 PM
TTC will destroy many generations of Texas. From the many, many gravesites it will disturb, and the very History of Texas. To the current Homes, Families and business in its way. And then on into the future, as it reduces the amount of food produced, that will not be available for the 60% increase of new families that TxDOT says are comming to Texas. I dont think ol' 39% is going to feed them with a few loaves of bread and a few fish.

Posted by: Adele Gorody Location: Harris County on Mar 3, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Please stop development of this unnecessary highway.

Posted by: trish Location: Wharton County on Mar 3, 2008 at 12:09 PM
I would hope that txdot realizes that no matter where they go with this plan, people in the pathway will react the same way as those along the I-69 route. There are protests in Marfa regarding the Entrada al Pacifico and there are protests along the I-35 corridor and I'll bet there are protests along the CanMex corridor too...americans are sick of their governments giving away what they have worked very hard to have. Go Away Rick Perry and take George W with you!!!

Posted by: James Location: Pattison on Mar 3, 2008 at 12:09 PM
If Austin can double decker their freeways why could not I-59 through Houston to not get the same and not go around Houston, and save on costs to purchase property? Intially years ago the whole thought was presented to use existing roadways. If we are bypassing the big towns how is that connecting them on the TTC? Will the property and house notes I have purchased and will build be the actual value I'll be reimbursed completely or will I have to "pay" extra walk away and give it to a foreign entity?

Posted by: Pam Location: Harris Co, Houston, TX on Mar 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I DO NOT want a trans-Texas corridor to force people off their property & take more land when they can use the existing highways! What a waste of money and time! Is Tex-dot ONLY INTERESTED in doing things the expensive/hard way? One wonders whose ox is being gored here?!

Posted by: Ricky Location: Waller, TX on Mar 3, 2008 at 11:53 AM
I am supporting the "NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE". This entire project has been mirepresented from the beginning. I am supporting the initiative to IMPEACH Rick Perry. It's 1836 all over. "Remember the TTC"!

Posted by: Michelle Sorenson Location: Waller County on Mar 3, 2008 at 11:32 AM
We don't want it either! The TTC/I-69 is a bad plan from the get-go. I support the No Action Alternative. Go back to the drawing board, provide mobility along the pavement of US-59. Complete it & call it I-69. Stay off our rural farms!

Posted by: Trey Location: Waller on Mar 3, 2008 at 10:50 AM
To all of you out there that feel strongly about the "NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE", please join us tonight at the Bryan Civil Auditorium on S. Coulter for the TXDOT Public Hearing on the TTC-69 and then come to K.C. Hall in Hempstead tomorrow for the last TTC-69 Public Hearing, where we are promoting "YOUTH NIGHT". We are encouraging all of our young people, children and young adults, to come out and speak about how the TTC-69 will impact them. They will be the generation that pays the price for the mistakes and decisions we make today. I hope all of you will stand with us in bringing the facts to light. The "NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE" is the best alternative for Texas.

this will not benefit anyone or anything in the state of texas except ricardo perry. I am embarresed to think he would even consider letting mexican and other countries make all the money. but the worst is taking land from families who have worked hard to get and keep it. so much for the AMERICAN dream. shame on you perry.

Posted by: Corey Location: Waller on Mar 3, 2008 at 09:26 AM
It is amazing what power and greed will do to politicians. I bet none of them stand to lose their land, lifestyles, or sole means of income from working their land. I am in the "Red Zone" in Waller County for this FOREIGN supporting mexican invasion highway which means I will get pennies on the dollar(if any) for my land. Maybe I'll have enough money to buy Kyle a one way bus ticket to Mexico when they take my land. Oh I'm sorry, TXDot says I-69 doesn't go to Mexico. Maybe I'm misinformed. How about a one way ticket to Spain so Kyle can make sure we are all informed properly on how our land and toll money is spent.

We have got to stop this thing. If Perry and TEXDOT do push this thing through, in spite of the opposition, then we need a revolution. Something is just not rite about all this. Can you say North American Union?

To the People of Texas & all Americans in the world-- Fellow citizens & compatriots-- I am besieged, by MILLIONS or more of Mexicans under President Calderon --We have sustained loss of jobs, depressed wages and a continual Bombardment of taxes and tolls...and sadly, we have lost many a man, women and child Txdot is forcing us to surrender our farms and ranches at will. I have answered their demands without a cannon shot, but with comments at TCC hearings around the state Our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch -- The enemy is changing proposed routes when met with resistance and will no doubt change their route again in the future. First they had TTC 35...now it's TTC 69...tomorrow it might be your road being tolled.

I am in favor of the No Action alternative concerning the TTC-69. This project is grossly understudied and underdeveloped. It will mitigate thousands of acres of ranch and farm land that can never be recovered. It will take land off the local tax rolls. It will pollute the air with emissions from three times the number of trucks. It threatens security providing easier access from Mexico for contraband drugs, illegals and terrorists. Right now only 10% of containers are checked at the border. The light and air pollution are deadly to wild life and threaten the health of livestock. Drainage has not been remedied. Historic properties and cemeteries will never be recovered. Land in families since the 1800s will be taken. Rick Perry admits it is the only way he can think of to boost the Texas economy. While he is busy promoting his political career the citizens of Texas are rising up to fight for their land. Mail comments to TTC-69 PO Box 14428 Austin, TX 78761

We can all use the talking points about the DEIS that the recent and scheduled community hearing meetings are about, but we are missing the real issue -- that Governor Perry and his cronies on the TXDOT commission are, in the name of lack of funds for highways, wanting to SELL our state of Texas to foreign interests to collect tolls. Are we willing to sell the Texas that Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Anson Jones and those Texans who drew the black bean in Mexico sacrificed and fought for Texas? The I-69 Corridor is basically a flawed plan. There are other practical and less disruptive answers such as expansion of our present railroad right of ways that environmentalists favor as well as expansion of existing major highway paths.

Posted by: Bill Location: Grimes County on Mar 2, 2008 at 10:32 PM
I am also looking at losing some property in Grimes County if it goes through I am wondering if there is any finicial gaines to the the county. If that is the case I would say we need it. The only jobs we have are laborers or non techinical and hourly waged. The last 20 years has not been good for younger people in Grimes County. Large precentage of students in the Grimes County school are labeled economically disadvantaged. Two of the schools in Navasota were once again labeled academically unacceptable and have fallen into the no child left behind vouchers. Most can't relocate to better schools due to economics. If there is money in it and benefit the county go for it if not forget it.

I support the "No Action Alternative" to the TTC project. The use of eminent domain to turn land over to private, foreign corporations, to the purpose of building a toll road is a travesty. If Texas needs more highways, let Texas build them with tax dollars.

Lets say you have an antique clock. This clock happens to be something you inherited. It's been in the family for 125 years. The previous owner of the clock before your family was its maker, and it was made in Texas. You know that the clock is worth at auction around $100,000, but you would never sell because you can't put a dollar figure on sentimental value. Then one day an agent from the state comes to you and says “we’re taking your clock. We're going to give you $85,000 for you clock and you can't dispute us. We need to give it to the Spanish people over here so they can tear it up for parts to make a bunch of cheap plastic clocks in China. Then, Walwart will sell the cheap plastic clocks made in China.” You should be happy, right? Take the $85k and go buy someone else's antique clock or go buy thousands of plastic Walmart clocks. But its not the same. The state wants to take our land. To which many Texans are now saying “HELL NO!” You can fight for your country but not your land?

If TxDOT cared what Texans thought - this would have gone for a vote to the People. They don't care. This is all a formality. This is cause the next battle in Texas and FOR Texas. http://www.house.gov/paul/tst/tst2008/tst022408.htm

One of the issues in building the 1-69/TTC is that of security. Currently, the Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that more that 9,300 commercial trucks, carying everthing from pinatas to electronics, pass through Mexico into Laredo each day. As cargo shifts from Los Angeles to Mexico, it is expected to triple the amount of traffic moving from Mexico through the Texas Highway system. TJ Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council testified before Congress than less than 5 percent of the 6 million cargo containers entering the US each year are physically inspected by the US Custom and Border Protectin agents. In US Representative McCaul's report "A Line in the Sand" concluded, during 2005, of 1.2 million illegal aliens apprehended by the Border Patrol, 650,000 of those were not from Mexico, and 650 individuals were from "special interest countries" designated by our US Intelligence as countries that could export terrorist to the US. The TTC would funnel these into the State.

TxDOT with the help of Rick Perry and Ric Williamson have effectively created a financial crisis in their dept -- to enable ALL roads to become toll roads. Perry hired a lobbyist to help WRITE the legislation for the TTC - which was passed in 2003...most ALL the Texas House and Senate voted for this bill...H.B. No. 3588. Be aware - that this road will be funded by tax dollar funds AND PRIVATE FOREIGN INTERESTS! These same private foreign interests have been purchasing media outlets along the corridor to SILENCE any opposition! You will be paying FOR this road AND paying to ride on this road! This is the first leg of the NAFTA superhighway - NAFTA was signed in 1994. Read this: http://www.dot.state.tx.us/news/034-2007.htm

Posted by: horses&hay Location: Waller Texas on Mar 2, 2008 at 07:36 PM
This Highway is only being built because rick perry and pres.bush already have the money in their pockets.Cintra and the drug lords have already paid them off. TXdot wants us to think its for overpopulated areas that are to congested with traffic, I don't see any traffic in may hay field only the poor horses that need a home because of the growing population of unwanted horses that our state if face with. Do to the no slaughter law. If rick gets his way these horses will only be road kill. Just were are we going to put our cows and horses when they build these SUPERHIGHWAYS And what are they going to eat, we can't grow hay and corn on the concrete. What are they thinking. What is our government doing to us, they are selling TEXAS right out from under us. How will we feed our families and livestock. Our Agricultural land is irreplacable. Please people we have got to win this fight for us and our childrens future. Texans supplies most of the United States with food grown on our land.

I am for the NO ACTION ALTERNATIVE. Texas and the United States do not need this. It's illegal what TXDOT and Pecos Perry are doing to Texas!

In response to Kyle: go to www.wallercountycitizens.org and download the Citizens' Guide to the TTC-69 DEIS. You will find 20 reasons, supported by facts, on why the DEIS is insufficient and why the TTC-69 is bad for Texas. I've been to many of the public hearings, and Texans have spoken en masse that they don't want the TTC. You call these folks childish - what a slap in the face. These folks are the ones on whose back this great State was built. And now they stand to lose their farms and homes because a few folks in power think we need to build toll roads around Texas on brand new land rather than expand existing highways. Although those opposed to I-69 continue to be accused of not sticking to the facts, it is TXDOT that has repeatedly been caught misrepresenting things again and again - especially the true purpose of the project.

Posted by: joe Location: plantersville on Mar 2, 2008 at 02:43 PM
will we still be able to drive around by then? Isn't it getting to expensive already. How about just a real long dirt road for a horse and buggy.

Posted by: lg Location: grimes on Mar 1, 2008 at 01:02 PM
Sounds like those for the I-69/ttc may not be looking down the barrel of this monster we are facing, sure, your not looking to loose your home and/or your way of life, so what do you care. Brazos county pretty much runs the western part of Grimes with the Kings Oaks and furture "trash dump" and now they want us pay dearly for there "super highway", get real your just a collage town you don't need such a thing. Grimes county don't need it nor does the great state of TEXAS.

Posted by: Hillary Location: Anderson on Feb 29, 2008 at 08:17 PM
This is NOT a Not In My Backyard issue. It is a Texan, and even an American issue. Many TxDot officials that are there to "answer questions" during the open house have not even read the DEIC. Jordan in Austin- were you actually an adult when the Interstate Highway System was in it's planning stages? TxDot claims that they "don't know" how to pay for this QUARTER MILE WIDE monstrosity. Yet there is a contract with CINTRA (a Spanish company) and Zachary (which is NOT San Antonio-based, they merely have a shop there)- a contract that the public is not allowed to see or examine. State and Local officials are against it- except Brazos County officials, which seem to think this will be a great thing. We are all very suspicious about why Brazos County has a DEIC meeting- the corridor does not cross into Brazos. This is not just about taking land (without just compensation), it is about destroying whole communities. NOT ONE person spoke in favor of the TTC, and 99% are against it.

Posted by: Jordan Location: Austin on Feb 29, 2008 at 12:15 PM
The same whining came about when the interstate highway system was built. Now, TxDOT is kind enough to listen to the public. Unfortunately, like the modern protest, these hearings and meetings have allowed a few opposed to the corridor to appear like they represent everyone else.

Posted by: Paul Location: Navasota on Feb 29, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Not to mention the quarter mile wide corridor that will only be crossed by major FM roads, State Highways and US Highways. The "minor" FM roads would be cut in half, as well as EVERY existing county road. People's land would be split in some places, causing them to drive miles just to turn around and go to the other side. No frontage roads. Other places want this road, and Brazos County is proposing using the current SH 6 corridor, and either the SH 30 or SH 21 corridor to take it to east Texas. Of course, if you don't live in Grimes County, Kyle, what do you care if it gets you to San Antonio or Lufkin ten minutes quicker? This is a very, VERY big issue in this county, and people with historic family land should not have to give it up because Rick Perry wants a big road to let yet another foreign company manage for campaign contributions in return.

Posted by: MARGARET Location: SHIRO on Feb 29, 2008 at 11:45 AM
I AGREE WITH JUDGE SHIFFLET. WHAT PART OF NO DON'T THEY GET. WE MOVED TO SHIRO TO BE IN THE COUNTRY. ALIGN THE ROAD WITH EXISTING ROADS OR DROP THE WHOLE THING.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 29, 2008 at 11:44 AM
plus who is going to support these less populated counties when the state takes over the land. the counties will face financial troubles, when that happens, crime will go up, drug trafficing will increase, because the less money to support the county, the less money to protect the county. sad situation we are all facing. think about this. huckabee is all for infrastructure. do we really want him as pres to make these roads mandatory? i do not. i want my boarders protected, not an easier gateway.

Posted by: RA Location: Bryan on Feb 29, 2008 at 09:02 AM
Kyle how much land are you going lose if and when they build I69? Probably none at all. Just like most of the higher ups in Bryan. They are for it because they aren't the ones losing the land and houses that their families has worked years to earn and keep. How many ancestors of yours are buried in the cemetary that is in one of the proposed routes? It's funny how people who have nothing to lose when this goes through Grimes County are the ones that are for this super highway that is just a perfect opportunity for drug dealers to smuggle drugs and for terrorists to attack.

Posted by: Kyle Location: Bryan on Feb 28, 2008 at 10:13 PM
If these uninformed people are going to oppose something that would improve their region’s infrastructure, then move I-69 somewhere else. The childishness from those opposed to I-69 is really sad. It is all about emotions, rarely about facts. None seem to be able to present their case like an adult. The TxDot reps have the patience of a saint to put up with such abuse. I guess it could be worse; they could be claiming I-69 is part of some global conspiracy.
