Storm Chasing in the Central Plains

We are repositioning our target for the Hill City, Kansas area based on the current surface wind profiles. This area appears to be the area under the best instability and wind shear...both of which promote tornadic storms. We are driving along highway 283 just outside of Dodge City right now and we will likely lose communications within the next few minutes...will update with more info on our position as soon as we get to an area with more people than cows.

After several days of heavy rains, severe storms, and limited sunshine, the Brazos Valley will finally have a chance to dry out today. The weather across the Central Plains, however, is taking a quick turn for the worse. The conditions are coming together for a widespread severe weather outbreak across portions of southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma panhandle, which is where I am right now. I’m joined by a handful of stormchasers who are gearing up for what will likely be a very active day with the potential for several tornadic storms. Right now we are going over the latest data in effort to get a chase target. This target is where we expect the action to start and it looks like we are sitting right where we should be…Garden City, Kansas. We will continue to monitor the data as it come in, but the action will most likely hold off until the late afternoon when the atmosphere destabilizes.

We will continue to update this blog throughout the day as conditions warrant.
