Colorado State University 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook

SOUTH PADRE, TEXAS Forecasters with Colorado State University are expecting a quiet 2014 Hurricane Season. They released their outlook on the upcoming hurricane season Thursday.

The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast was released at the National Tropical Weather Conference. Dr. William Gray and Dr. Philip Klotzbach are calling for a low or quiet season.

  • 9 Named Storms

  • 3 Hurricanes

  • 1 Major Hurricane (Category 3+)

Forecasters say a growing El Nino pattern in the Pacific Ocean will help keep the season quiet. With a quiet tropical outlook, the 2014 forecast says the probability of a storm reaching land is low as well. The CSU forecast says there is a 35% chance for a storm to reach the United States coast, and a 19% chance for a storm to reach the Gulf Coast.

During the announcement, Dr. Klotzbach mentioned that while the chance for a storm reaching land is low, it means nothing if you are the one to get hit. Being storm ready and prepared is still key.

An update to the forecast will be released on June 2nd and again on July 31st.
