Drought Officially Over for the Brazos Valley

Updated: Thu 1:17 PM, Mar 29, 2012

The weekly Thursday morning drought monitor has been released and shows that all of the Brazos Valley is now officially, no longer classified to be in a drought.

What you will find from this week's monitor is that our entire 16 county area -- with the exception of Southern San Jacinto and Southern Montgomery Counties -- is still classified as "Abnormally Dry" (noted in yellow).

Soil moisture and rain data is collected on Tuesday mornings at 6am. Last week's drought monitor could have very well reflected the same information we are receiving this morning, however most of last week's rainfall fell shortly after 6am Tuesday.

To give you a perspective on how much rain really has fallen in 2012 for Bryan / College Station: (as of Thursday Morning)

--January Rainfall: 2.78"
--February Rainfall: 9.30"
--March (to date) Rainfall: 8.56"

In 28 days, March quickly moved it's way up to the top of the list to become the wettest March ever on record for Bryan / College Station. With this year's rainfall already topping 20.64" -- 2012 in 3 months has had more rain fall than 2011 did in one whole year.

Since the last data collection, multiple inches of rain have fallen once again and could very well erase the "Abnormally Dry" classification in place. The next Drought Monitor will be released Thursday, April 5th at 7:30am.

More information on how the Drought Monitor is created can be found here.
