North Taurid Meteor Shower

Updated: Wed 10:57 AM, Nov 21, 2012

Although the North Taurid Meteor Shower takes place between October 12 through December 2, tonight will be one of the few nights the meteors are actually visible. This evening, November 12th, marks the peak of the meteor shower.

The moon is in its waning crescent phase and isn't expected to rise until close to dawn. This will allow for the stars and meteors to be more visible across the night sky.

The North Taurid Meteor Shower is a modest one producing 7 meteors per hour only at its peak. The meteors tend to be slow moving and larger than the average meteor. Sometimes the North Taurid Meteor shower is known to produce large fireballs as well known as a "Taurid Fireball".

The best time to catch one of the slow moving meteors or fireballs will be between midnight and one in the morning. Keep in mind that the meteor shower will take place across the entire night sky and not stick to a specific location.

If you aren't able to catch the North Taurid Meteor Shower tonight there is still a possibility of being able to see one over the next few evenings while the moon is still in its waning crescent phase.
