Today, November 30, is the official last day of hurricane season. This doesn't necessarily mean that hurricanes cannot form after this day. However, it is highly unlikely.

The latest date a tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic Ocean is December 30, 2005. 2005 was one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, so it was no surprise that Tropical Storm Zeta formed on this day. Zeta lasted all the way into January of 2006, finally dissipating on the 6th.

Hurricanes have also formed after the season officially ended. Hurricane Alice had the exact same life span as Tropical Storm Zeta, lasting from December 20 to January 6 of the next year. The only difference? Alice formed in 1954.

Even though hurricane season has come to an end, tropical systems have formed before the official start date and after the official end date. Make sure you are keeping an eye on the tropics at all times and are prepared in case a surprise storm does form.
