Strong to Severe Storms Move Through Brazos Valley

Strong storms came through the Brazos Valley early Sunday morning and brought some intense weather with it.

Around 1 am Sunday morning, strong thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent cloud to ground lightning started drifting southward into Leon, Milam, Robertson, and Madison counties. These storms moved pretty slow but arrived in Brazos county just before 3 am.

As the storm got closer to Bryan and College Station, it was starting to gain strength. When it was right over the twin cities, the National Weather Service then issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 3:30 am.

A severe thunderstorm can pop up quickly and unexpectedly, as well as stick around for a short amount of time. During the overnight hours when the sun isn't out to fuel the storms, this is more likely to happen.

A thunderstorm is considered severe when the wind gusts in the storm are equal to or greater than 58 mph, hail has a diameter of 1 inch or greater, or there is a tornado in the storm.

After the storm moved southward, it moved into more stable air and became not severe.

A series of upper level disturbances have been trekked to move through the Brazos Valley Sunday, causing steady rainfall across the area. This is the same system that brought the rough weather early this morning. Since the atmosphere is more stable, these showers are less likely to become severe.

We have gotten several pictures sent into the Weather Center from this event. If you have a picture, send it to weather@kbtx.com and it could be featured in stories throughout the day and during News 3 at 10 tonight!
