MIAMI Subtropical Storm Melissa has strengthened far from land in the central Atlantic.
The storm's maximum sustained winds rose Monday afternoon to 60 mph (95 kph).
Melissa is centered about 650 miles (1,045 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda and is moving northwest near 9 mph (15 kph) with a turn to the north expected early Tuesday and later another turn to the northeast.
Forecasters say Melissa could be near hurricane strength by Tuesday afternoon and is expected to remain a large storm system for the next several days.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says large swells from the storm are already affecting parts of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the southeastern Bahamas.
