Tropical Storm Karl has formed in the Caribbean and is expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico later this week. This is one of three storms currently active in the Atlantic basin. Hurricanes Igor and Julia are not expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the Eastern Yucatan Peninsula as Karl heads for the Mexican coastline where 3-5 inches of rain are expected.

After moving over the Yucatan, Karl should continue to move generally toward the West, and make landfall a second time along the Mexican coast, well to the south of Texas. Earlier this season, Hurricane Alex and Tropical Depression 2 also hit the Eastern portions of Mexico, bringing torrential rain and catastrophic flooding.

As this system moves into the Southwestern Gulf, more moisture will move into the Brazos Valley, bringing better rain chances to the area by Friday.

Karl is the eleventh named storm in the Atlantic basin this season.
