2011 Hurricane Season Officially Comes to a Close

With today being the last day of November, the 2011 Hurricane Season has officially come to an end. While most did not make landfall, this was the 3rd most active season in history.

The season kicked off with the formation of Tropical Storm Arlene on June 29th -- which made landfall in Veracruz, Mexico.

The two storms that most will remember from this past season are Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Irene was the first storm to hit the United States Coast since Hurricane Ike in 2008. While Irene did make landfall, for the most part the storm's center of circulation stayed just off land and moved parallel with the Eastern Seaboard. Irene will be remembered for the wide spread flooding that occurred from the Carolinas to the New England States.

Tropical Storm Lee, while not a large storm, caused more harm than good to drought stricken Texas. As Lee made landfall in Louisiana, it caused drier, gusty winds to blow in from the north across East and Central Texas during the Labor Day weekend. Those dry winds spawned and fanned the flames of fires such as the Grimes County Fires, Leon County Fires and one that all of the state will remember, the Bastrop County fires.
