Shelters are open in Bryan-College Station for local residents needing a place to ride out the storm, but some locals are not heeding the warning.
They tell News Three they are going to stay in their homes, even though officials have warned those in substandard or mobile homes to leave.
Lea Abrams is one of those residents staying.
"It's quite a bit of work," Abrams said. "I did some cutting on the trees there."
Lea kept her children busy, picking up leaves and making last minute preparations in anticipation of Ike.
"We bought candles, batteries, flashlights, lots of water," Abrams said.
The family of four recently moved from Michigan, and this hurricane will be there first.
"This is nothing compared to what I'm about to see," Abrams said. "They're talking about flooding and electricity being out. Well we're kind of used to electricity being out, but we're not used to the wind and a bunch of rain."
Across the street Nicole Bell was also getting ready for the storm, picking up things in her yard that could blow away.
Local officials urged mobile home residents to seek other shelter, but Nicole told us she's not afraid of Ike
"I'm staying here," Bell said. "I don't think it's going to get that bad, but bad enough for me to pick up my yard stuff."
Even though some residents are taking last minute precautions, others are taking the storm lightly.
A volleyball game in one Bryan neighborhood was all the rage.
However, back at the Abrams house, they were ignoring the fun on the eve of Ike. The Abrams plan to hunker down and weather the storm inside their own house.
"This will be quite an adventure," Abrams said.
