The day after the storm, thousands in the Brazos Valley were still without power Sunday night.

"They're ready to go, too. It's hot inside," said Mike Harris about his barking dogs.

Harris and his three dogs were enjoying all the time they can outdoors, because the last 24 hours indoors have been almost unbearable.

"Oh lordy, it's hot inside," Harris said. "Last night was the first time since I was kid that I slept without air conditioning."

It's the last nights Harris plans on spending in the heat too. He's packing up his dogs and bags and heading to Austin until the power in Navasota comes back on.

"I think it's going to be quite a while," Harris said. "When you get five million people out of electricity, they're not going to be out here in a couple of hours."

Next door, Raphael Cortez is also wondering how long the heat will last.

"They say two to three days," Cortez said, but he and his family came prepared for the storm and stocked up groceries, and are currently storing a few key essentials in a cooler outside.

"Milk, water, orange juice, and cheese," Cortez said while pointing to the cooler.

But it's not only houses in downtown Navasota that have been left in the dark. Many businesses like NAPA's Auto Parts have also closed shop, and it's easy to see why.

"I noticed initially when I came down that the power lines were down, and that's what I was primarily looking at," Chuck Frede said. "As I was about to drive off, I noticed the roof was missing off the building."

Now just a tangled mess of steel outside, with no roof on the building as the storm blew over, the inside took a hit as well.

"The lobby area of course all that got wet and a lot of ceiling tiles have dropped to the floor," Frede said.

Although the recovery process is getting underway, there's still a lot to be done to get things back up and running the way they were before Ike came knocking on Navasota's door.

Due to the power outages in Navasota, the city implemented a curfew from 7 p.m. Sunday evening to 7 a.m. Monday morning. School has also been cancelled there for Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, city officials are still asking residents to conserve water. A supply of ice is also being distributed to residents to Navasota.
