AUSTIN (AP) - Landmark buildings in historic Galveston sustained
heavy water damage from Hurricane Ike, but an official says it
could have been worse.
Galveston Historical Foundation executive director Dwayne Jones
said Monday that some of the city's 19th-century buildings took on
8 to 10 feet of water. Fortunately, though, he says wind damage
wasn't as bad as it could have been if Ike had been stronger.
Jones says the famous 1877 ship Elissa lost several sails but
seemed to ride out the hurricane well. She still sails once a year
and should be able to make her March voyage.
Officials were still working Monday to survey damage to historic
properties. The historical foundation has set up shop temporarily
in Austin.
