Navasota Grocery Store Powerless Against Spoiled Food

With thousands of Brazos Valley residents still in the dark, some businesses in Navasota are truly beginning to feel the hit.

"We're throwing away anything that was refrigerated," Russell Mitchell with Harlan Grocery Store said.

Carts are filling up at Harlan's Grocery store in Navasota, only the carts aren't headed towards the cash register, they're headed to the dumpster.

"This is the second dumpster full and we're hoping to get this one done today so we can fill up the next," Mitchell said.

For the past two days, the staff at Harlan's has been working around the clock to clear all the shelves of spoiled dairy products and food.

"I've been here 20 plus years and never had to throw away this much stuff," Florian Gurka said.

What's now trash, was at one time, the grocery store's treasure. Roughly $60,000 worth food, now sits spoiled outside.

But it hasn't soured the spirits of those who work there.

"Everyone is asking when we're going to open up, we tell them, we're working as hard as we can to get it open," Gurka said.

Employees with the store say even when the power does come back on, they will still only be able to operate on a limited basis because some of the store's food orders are on hold right now.
